Cool Coolant Sensor Oil Leaking into wiring main harness affecting main computer. (RECALL)

Hi All,

I am new to "posting" (FIRST TIME) so please be nice

I dropped off my Mini 2011 Countryman S 4all (30k miles) yesterday for an oil change and was told that my car has a recall for two bad sensors, one coolant and one relay sensor.

My concern is that the service manager told me that my car could be in for service for up to three weeks because the bad sensor is leaking oil into the main wiring harness and the oil is running back (in the harness) to the main computer in some cars. He told me this is a new recall and if the computer was affected by the oil the computer would also have to be replaced. Ok, works for me! BUT, I was thinking, is Mini (BMW) also going to replace the wiring harness that is now filled with oil from the leaking sensor? I have a call into the dealer about this concern.

I was wondering if anyone else was told about this "oil leak" affecting the main computer and the wiring harness? If so, how is the damaged harness going to be addressed?

Please let me know, thanks.

Bob

Your oil leaks sounds like the one I had fixed for the Oil Pump Solenoid. And yes they did replace the wiring harness that was coated in oil. It is all covered by your warranty. This topic is being discussed in the thread Oil Pump Solenoid.

But 3 weeks seems a little long for a Collant Temp Sensor and the Oil Pump Solenoid. My dealeer fixed both in two days.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the harness checked for oil or is it always replaced? Even if the computer is fine?

I really like my Mini, but it is having a LOT of problems and recalls. :-/

It is checked for oil. If none is other it isn't replaced. Same with the DME

You should be OK. I believe it gets rare to see it after 09/11 if my memory serves me correctly

We had been noticing spots starting to show up in the driveway where my husband parks our '11 Justa CM. Last night on the way home from work, my husband called and said the cooling fans were coming on at startup again. We figured the thermostat was going out again so we took it in today and had them check out the oil leak too.

Turns out the oil leak is from a bad Oil pressure sending unit (oil pump solenoid) and it did travel up the harness so that needs to be replaced now too. I believe the build date was June or July '11.

They said about a week to fix it, but forgot about the holiday next week so we will see.

I noticed a few oil spots a few weeks ago, and we took our car (Jan. 2012 build) in today for this plus the coolant temperature sensor TSB (no symptoms), and 1 year oil change. The shop is replacing the wiring harness as well as the Oil Pump Solenoid, with a two day estimate to complete.

The dealership lent us a 6-speed manual Mini Roadster to use while the car is in the shop. What a fun car!

By the way, anyone know what an "Oil Pump Solenoid" is? Not something I have ever heard of. Most oil pumps are purely mechanical with no wiring involved.

DR61, there's a thread on here called "N18 oil wicking issue - check it" which seems to describe your symptoms and might give you more info...Your oil leak didn't seem to upset the cooling fan sensor.

My service guy and invoice indicated that the tiny leak was at the Oil Pump Solenoid, and MINI specifies that if this is found that the engine wiring harness be replaced, so that oil is not eventually drawn up to the engine computer. Seems unlikely this would happen, but I'm not complaining that they fixed both the leak and replaced the wiring.

They also did the temperature sensor update and free yearly oil change. They gave us a Cooper Roadster 6-speed manual to play with for the 3 days our car was in the shop, which was VERY fun!

Yup, it looks like you've had the two major issues 'sussed' painlessly in one visit + can now look forward to enjoying your MINI.
