Ice Bag On Intercooler?

Since I'm asking questions: Is it legal to do this -- to put a bag of ice on the intercooler between runs?

Sure, its legal. I use a garden sprayer full of ice water and hose down the intercooler between runs. That coats more of the surface area to allow for greater heat transfer. Works pretty well, as I can typically get the surface of the intercooler back down to ambient temp or below.

What's not legal is to spray on course, though water injection is allowed. I think the concern officially is getting fluids on the course surface.

Wouldn't the plastic ice bag block airflow through the intercooler?

Yes it would...if you drove the car with the bag still on the intercoooler. I think this is just used between runs to cool down the intercooler, and is removed just before the car is driven again.

Ahhh...I missed the "between runs" bit.

Sorry.

It is also illegal to pack the intercooler full of ice for your run. You can ice the intercooler between runs, but no ice left on it during your run.

There is a possibility that the bag itself would melt and then gunk up the airflow through the heat exchanger...your first run might be your last run.
