Got it all cleaned up this morning and took the family for ice cream. At the end of the driveway we stop to back in and as soon as I press the brake we hear a clunk under the car.
Start backing in and there is fluid dripping a line on the road. Stop and the fluid starts a puddle so I back it into the driveway to get out of the road. Shut the car down and check diagnostics, everything is ok. Open hood and the windshield washer fluid has covered the entire bay of the engine...
Called roadside assistance and the advance techs will call back in the morning before it's towed back to the dealer. Anyone seen this issue before?
No messages or warning lights then or now. So I assumed from the blue liquid that it was washer fluid since it looks low. The closer I look and from where it is I think it actually blew a radiator house and that it is coolant all over my engine.
I've only seen green, orange and yellow antifreeze. Do MINI's have blue antifreeze?
With 500 miles on my Jeep Wrangler I hauled a camping trailer 1800 miles to Moab, Utah. Climbed and beat the thing on rocks for 2 weeks. Got in and drove 1800 miles home including nonstop from Denver to NY and it's a Chrysler.
My MINI can't make it a 1/2 mile down the road and back for ice cream :( Hopefully a simple fix and the dealer will give us a loaner while its down. I havent even filled out my new car survey I received today.
Well that is good. Touch the fluid, if its sticky it is coolant. BMW/MINI/RR uses a blue coolant. This seems way out of place to be honest. I was just talking with my shop foreman and he said that he is very grateful because the new cars are so reliable. The Second Gen cars were a nightmare when they came out.
Your absolutely right, thanks. Found a thread with the specs too. When I was on with MINI roadside assistance he told me antifreeze is orange or green so it must be something else
So she'll get a ride on the flatbed an hour and a half north to the dealer tomorrow. We better have a loaner for this one. I'll keep everyone updated, thanks for the help.
Picked upped last Saturday, and have 1100 on the Odometer of my 2017 MINI S Clubman ALL4. I have my first oil change already scheduled for Wednesday. After 29 vehicles before this MINI, I typically get them done at 1,000 new, but when I saw MINI suggesting the break-in at 1,200 figured I'd go ahead and wait till then...
So far so good with the whole roadside assistance process and my dealer Mini of Rochester. I'm currently riding in a rollback on the way to the dealer. They already called and said they had a loaner Clubman available and reserved for me. They will take a look this afternoon and give me a call when they find out the issue.
So my Mini dealer just called after they got done looking over the car. It appears the assembly line left an extra engine bolt laying on the top of the motor. Service said it was a special bolt that they recognized immediately when they pulled it out of the radiator All the bolts were in the car as needed so this was an extra.
It must have finally shook loose after 500 miles. It dropped into the fan which thew it through the radiator hence dumping all my coolant. It needs a new radiator and cooling fan. Maybe done end of this week but probably by early next week.
Must have been that factory worker on a Friday looking forward to his pint after work!!!!
Or had a pint during work. Worked for the California Highway Patrol where we equipped their cars. During inspectiona we found many 1/2 pints of JD behind the door panels or in the recesses in trunk also under rear seat alone with lunch bags and empty KFC containers.

All 3, Ford, GM, Chrysler. Chrysler was the worst. They hated building cop cars. We had to make sure the suspension and brakes were safe and grind off messages on oil and trans pans. During the 80's it was the worst it has improved over the years, by the time I retired in 03 it wasn't a problem.
Just a quick update. Dealer called as they said they would this afternoon. Unfortunately the radiator is on national backorder because the vehicle is so new. The best case scenario is getting a radiator on 6/10 with a couple additional days for repairs.
We also reached out to MINI about the situation and have been assigned a motoring specialist to review our case. NY Lemon Law says 30 days without your vehicle so we are on the clock right now.

MINI Roadside is a division of Allstate so they have general car information but rarely is it specialized to MINI.
Crazy that something went straight through the radiator! I had an issue with a cup holder in my car. Also national back order situation, but it came in from Germany pretty quick! Hopefully they get it sorted quickly for you. I know that they will definitely take care of you. This new Clubman is their flagship and they won't tolerate dissatisfaction.
What is the build month for your Clubman....there are plenty of them available if was built before 2/16 ? Wonder why there are two, what differences could be.

I don't have my vehicle handy but ran it through the VIN decoder and build date came up as 4/2016.
