Inside rear view mirror removal

Ok, maybe a silly question, I know, but I'm installing a slightly smaller mirror onto the windshield like the 70's-90's cars into my 2005, S hatchback/coupe. The stock mirror is too "in my face" and it blocks a lot of the windshield when turning right.

Question is - to unlock the wire harness connector in the mirror body...is this a side to side or a front-back squeeze to unlock it from the mirror base ? I can't pull the wiring far enough out of the head liner to be able to easily see the connector and how it's lock is designed. If I know what direction to "work" things, that'll help get me started.
I don't want to cut the stock mirror wire harness...just because.

Thanks for any help

Mike

You must take off the covers off the mount first. It’s a squeeze of the left and right sides. Separate and then you can get to the harness.

There's no covers to remove. It's sort of an oval piece that appears to be, one piece. Will look again though.

Thanks.

RedAggie -

Um...no...reread my question..! I got the mirror removal from the car down pat.
How do I get my fat fingers in to "unplug it" is the question. Hopefully Zsm gave me that info.

My kid just finished replacing his broken rear view mirror.

I snapped a quick pick of the new mirror. One cover is off and you can see the plug easily.

Yep, got it.
Thanks again Zsm. The seam down the center is very tight/clean, and difficult to see.
Pulled it back down off the roof, and just pulled on the outer housing half's, three pieces and disconnected..!

Got the new mirror in place, MUCH better, now I can see out the windshield without looking around that poorly placed mirror. It's narrower than the OEM mirror, so I need to look side to side a little to see the entire rear window...but that's just fine.
Here's the mirror I used (didn't pay this much..!). It's made of stainless steel. Since the car is silver, I painted the mirror backside dark gray.

I also had to modify the base, the piece that bonds to the glass. Needed to get more angle, got it and all is well.

Right now it's attached with the double sided tape adhesive. We'll see how well it works. It stayed in place thru today's 90+ degree heat.
Now I gotta come up with some sort of cover on the headliner.
