Although tires are probably the biggest improvement, unfortunatly it's not just the rubber that make one person go faster than the other. It's all the other mods too. Camber plates, springs and sway bar are also great ways to go faster.
I think motor mods are a little over rated for autocross, especially on the tighter tracks. Dave has proven this a few times with his MC vs the MCS. It may also be the reason I was able to go faster than quite a few of the high HP BMW's out there. These cars are like go karts in comparison to their bigger cousins.
If you really wanted to see who the best driver is, I would think you'd have to have bone stock cars and then switch between runs because some Mini's run stronger than others out of the box.
Have fun people.

Welll... regardless of how many MINIs show up in boxes, me and teh MININUTS will be there in force.
I think we bringing the spanking paddle too. So cmon guys, the time is near.
Get your MINIs ready, because we coming to p'lay.
p.s. Rory is so right about power being nuffin for autocross, it's all about the tires mostly, then comes teh suspension.
If anyone would like to donate ANYTHING for this great event on September 9th in San Diego, feel free to post here or send me an email. thanks.

At least that's how I'm justifying my past performance in San Diego.

Hopefully no one minds that I post this here, I'm selling my 15" Kosei wheels with the Goodyears still on them (big whoop since one of them is shot).
They are 15 X 7 with a 38 offset. I originally had 225 45 15 Avons mounted on them with no rubbing issues and no spacers. This is with H-Sport springs.
If you feel the need to replace the shot Goodyear then you'll need the spacers and the longer lugs I have for them. I'll throw in the lugs but I'll have to ask the owner of the spacers if he wants to sell them.
For the wheels and Goodyears I'm looking for $400.00. They retail for $149 each and have less than 100 miles on them (all autocross).
I don't want to ship them so that's why I'm posting here instead of the general for sell forum.
Thanks,
Rory

wow! rory selling his wheels! thats like rocky throwing in the towel.
oh well.... AT LEAST WE GOT YOU ON TAPE :P
Honestly Rory, I think you should get some slippery tires, i.e. BFG geforce Sport 215/45 and autocross on those. It will give you autocrossing in a whole new light, kind of like driving on ice. Believe it or not, it's FUN. Hell, if you want I'll loan you mine for free, I still have the POS upstairs on my balcony. Just be prepared to not win anymore.

With new 15" inch light wheels, sticky rubber thanks to Dave, and my engine damper that really smooths out power delivery, I'm loving my daily commute and canyon driving more than ever.
I'm ready for some serious Autocrossing, atleast before I wear out my tires again!
I'll put up one of my Detailing DVD's as a prize if desired!
Btw, anyone who hasn't installed the engine dampener should! It makes a night and day difference. I didn't realize how great it was until I took a vacation and didn't drive my MINI for a week! Then I drove in some rush hour (1st gear) traffic, and discovered none of the lurching that would happen upon hard acceleration and deceleration in 1st. And this isn't the feeling during shifting, it's while the car is already in gear and you just step on or release the gas.
