GAS GAUGE MALFUNCTION!!!

Yesterday the gas needle hit the floor and the red light was on. I nursed it home and added gallon of gas, ( I get such great mileage I couldn't remember when I filled it up). Today, driving down the hill to he gas station the needle it 1/3 tank and by the time I was there it was @ 7/8 of a tank.

Has anyone else experienced this problem/ any solutions?

Thanks

Not sure if it's the same issue, but I have a faulty sending unit so my gas gauge intermittently will fail to register any fuel in the tank.

Talking to my SA, it sounds like this is a relatively common problem. I haven't had time to get it replaced, but since the gauge usually will resume operations after a day or so, I haven't made it a priority.

I ran out of gas when the needle was at 1/4 tank. After a brief visit from AAA, the MINI went in for service. I was told ther are 2 sending units in the tank, both were replaced under warranty. SA mentioned they have had a few issues with the sending units.

Good luck to you!

Now I am wondering if the needle is stuck at 3/4 of a tank. Has anyone had that problem?

Whether you have "silly lights" or a needles doesn't affect it. It's the sending unit. The fact that, in one case an electrical impulse turns on or off a light and, in another, moves a needle, doesn't change the fact that the signal being sent (or not sent) is wrong.

Known problem due to bad gas possibly. High sulfer content in the gas is coating the sensor in the tank and giving the gauge false readings or none at all. The fix is to use chevron with techron fuel treatment ever 3k miles. The dealer will most likely change the sender and tell you the samething about the fuel treatment if you still have a warranty. Good luck.

I had a 98 M Roadster and a 2002 Z06 both with gas gage problems. Once I started using Red Line fuel system cleaner once a month (just a few ounces) I never had a problem again.
