power steering pump won't shut off - ever!

Ok - the history - 04 MCS, new to me a few months ago. pretty noisy pump, IMO. Power steering went out while driving about 2 weeks ago. I researched the boards, figured I needed a new pump, searched car-part.com and got a salvage yard pump from an 06 delivered to my door on Monday. Put the pump in, noticing that the fan was frozen... Put the new pump on, left the fan off b/c it doesn't work and I ordered one the next day. Drove the car that night, worked great. next day, still working, all is well. I get to the car after work and it is completely dead. Get a jump, drive it home, park in the garage. Turn the car off and the pump is still running. Matter of fact, I can't get it to stop unless I disconnect the

resurrecting an old thread because I am having the same problem. Power steering pump wont turn off. With the key out of the ignition i still have power steering. I have to disconnect the battery to get it to turn off. The reason I knew it was still on is because my pump is really loud lately whining.

Also, if I turn the A/C on the power steering fan doesn't turn on. Should it? Im not sure if its a related issue or not.

please help.

would it be easy to add a switch to manually turn the PS off to delay repair bills?

This is on a 03 MCS btw

Possibly your fan is bad which caused the steering pump to overheat and fail. How many miles on your S?

The power steering assists in steering just fine. Just won't turn off...

Pump's shorted, you need a new one. This is an actually a common failure for the earlier first gen MINIs. I think there's a big thread about this actually somewhere. They also have been known to start fires, so be careful.

I'm not sure about the A/C and the pump correlation. I need to look at the schematics but I do remember there was a recall associated with the pump fan and radiator fan. I believe it was that when the pump fan failed, the aux fan wouldn't run because they were on the same circuit causing it to overheat. I don't know if the aux fan is on the same circuit as the pump though.
