the clicking is from the starter relay. That happens on all auto and trucks when the battery voltage is too low to turn the engine over. You either need to charge the battery or replace it. Of course, if you have a manual transmission you can push start the car in the forward direction at between 15 and 20mph and, if you have an automatic transmission, pull start it with another vehcile while in reverse gear between 40 and 45mph.

Hmmm, don't remember learning about this one in driver's ed. Something about the idea of being towed backwards at 45MPH while trying to get the engine to start just doesn't sound particularly safe.

Regardless, the owner's manual says that you can't push-start (or presumably, pull-start) a MINI with an automatic trasmission.

Yeah, I don't recommend that either. That seems like a quick way to trash a tranny.

In the old days, some auto trannies had rear pumps. I'm not sure if any models do now... with a tranny with a rear pump it was possible to roll off an auto, but I believe you rolled forward. The only auto trannies I have ever had in my life were inherited or junkers that were given to me because someone felt sorry for me, hehe.

Rolling off a manual tranny certainly does not need much speed. I have pushed many, many cars (including electronic FI) and successfully started them at around 2-3 mph.. even pushed them by myself by pushing them at the door jamb while the door was open, then jumping in and popping the clutch in 2nd going about 3 mph on level ground and got it started.

There are a lot of ways to get out of a mess other than calling a tow truck with your cell phone.

If you have the original battery, look to see if the dot is black. If it is, you need a new battery. The MINI battery is a hunk of junk and will leave most people stranded at some point. I recommend that you just replace it and be done with it.
