P0172 system too rich (stock injectors)
Just got my car back from the dealership. It threw a code a couple weeks ago which turned out to be a P0172 (System Too Rich) code. It threw the code after some stop and go traffic (mostly stop though
) in some high humidity heat. The SES light came on once out of the traffic and cruising around 50mph in 6th.
Relevant mods:
17% pulley (installed approx. 10 months ago)
Alta CAI (installed approx 1 year ago.)
Stock injectors
Stock exhaust
Stock ignition
Stock head
All other threads that I found with a P0172 had aftermarket injectors that were probably too big.
Oh, and I should add that I have run out of gas a few times (yes, I know, I'm retarded
).
I read on obd-codes.com that it could be:
A dirty MAF sensor (would be a MINI first seeing as we use a MAP system I think).
A vaccuum leak. (Possible, but not probably as nothing but the pulley and the intake have been touched i.e. intercooler boots/horns, etc.)
The injectors are dirty and/or bad? (Very possible) I suppose I should try some fuel system cleaner (Redline?).
There is a problem in the fuel system other than the injectors (don't know enough about the fuel system to rule this out, however I doubt this would be a problem)
A dirty/bad O2 sensor. (Possible but not probable).
So, any thoughts? Is my thinking sound? Anything I haven't thought of?
Thanks in advance.

Just a hunch here...
Have you done the VGS mod to drive the SC bypass valve from the manifold vacuum? I have done this mod and, a while ago, a vacuum line popped off the fuel regulator tripping the same code. Though, as you point out, there are a number of other causes for this.
Double check any area of the engine that has been tampered with. Specifically, any vacuum line that may have been unknowingly snagged when doing the CAI or raising the right side of the engine for the pulley.
Good uck,
Theo

I'm throwing this code occasionally - at various RPMS and load levels... maybe once every 2-3 weeks, but sometime more frequently. Started after I got my RMW cam and header installed. Haven't found anything that's causing it specifically - and it happens pretty infrequently... I just clear it and go about my business...

"System too rich" is too vague. I had a rich code, dont remember which one, but it said bank one front oxygen sensor too rich, open circuit. I changed the sensor, and cleared the light. After 5 starts and good runs, I have the light back on, but I don't know if it is for the o2 sensor or a fuel system minor vapor leak code I had before and never did anything to resolve as of yet.
Some guy, we had a car in the shop for P2096, and the problem was resolved by a software update. Would you, or anyone for that matter, know if the P2096 is a code that 05/06 Mini's get? After doing a lot of research on that issue it appeared that 02/03/04's were immune (or at least didn't find anyone reporting the issue that happened to have that year)
