transmission/clutch problems/questions

I have a 04 MCS and recently the clutch or transmission started making a whinning noise. but the noise only appears in first gear when taking off from a stop. it doenst happen every time but when i does it makes me wonder what it might be. has anything like this happened before and if so just a little insite to what it might be. one more question, is there a way to check the transmission fluid? underneath or from above. well, thats all i have for now

thanks for the help

More than likely it is the flywheel making the noise but it could be the clutch release bearing, or clutch release splines, or something else altogether different than the drivetrain.

Here is a how-to that will show you where the transmission fluid would go, http://www.lonestarminiclub.com/foru...read.php?t=474 You could undo the fill plug and stick your little finger in there to check the level but I think it would be a good idea to drain and replace the fluid in case there might be tell tale signs of something amiss in the fluid.

are you talking about a loud "groaning/squeal" type of noise? if so it's most probably the "faces" of the flywheel/clutch when they come together for the first time when you let go of the clutch pedal.

are you still under warranty? if so take it in. is an expensive job if you have to pay for it. i have replaced 3 sets of flywheels/clutches for the same type of noise.

sounds like a worn throw out bearing
