Thanks for the feedback.

Sounds like they're aware of the problem and will go ahead and replace the defective components under warranty without needing to replicate the problem.

So for anyone having experienced this unsettling problem at least once, take it in while it's still under warranty to get this taken care of.

Stranded on I-95 on Monday, out of gas!!!

I had the opposite problem. My 2009 MINI S has a little over 5,000 miles on it. I took delivery December 2008. I’ve noticed problems with my gas gauge from the beginning.

A few months ago my MINI puttered out when I had 1/4 tank of gas. I was stranded on I-95 Baltimore during rush hour and had to be towed. It was a scary ordeal to be stuck on I-95 with tractor trailers zooming by at 70 – 80 mph. That time it was the Fuel Pressure Pump which had to be replaced. They had to order the part because it wasn’t one of the parts they kept in stock. The advisor told me the pump was no longer pumping fuel into the engine therefore, ran out of gas. They fixed it and I thought I was good to go.

Well, one day a few weeks ago I had a 1/2 tank of gas. I parked the car that PM, woke up to go to work next AM and the gauge read empty and the warning sound and lights came on that I was on "Fuel Reserve". How can that be, I had a 1/2 tank………I thought. I looked around for a gas leak, but nothing. Luckily I have a gas station two blocks from my house, so I slowly drove over with my fingers crossed and filled up. I thought maybe just a fluke or something.

I was driving home from work on I-95 (Baltimore) on Monday, had plenty of gas 1/3 of a tank as the gauge was reading but my Mini puttered out again like the last time. I had to be towed to Mini of Towson again. This time they discovered one of the fuel sensors in the tank was bad. They replaced it and now I can go pickup my MINI today. I really hope this is the last of my fuel tank problems. Now, how do I trust what that gas gauge is reading????????

I have a new 2009 JCW and I ran out of gas but is read that I still had 29 miles left on the gauge. I was two miles to the gas station and it died on the intersection ramp of two freeways. Not a good place to wait, but AAA got there to help me out.

Our 2008 R56 has been showing the same symptoms sometimes lately -- after filling tank, when started the next day the gauge sometimes reads about half full, and eventually works its way back to the real reading. My wife also said she was parked on an incline the other day and the distance-to-empty went up to 900 miles or something.

So having the dealer replace the sending units should fix this?

The same thing happens to me from time to time. Im throwing an SES #P1477, something to do with the leakage diagnostic pump not working. I suspect that has something to do with it.

Well I will put in a good word for Bill Jacobs in Naperville IL -- they fixed 2 problems (one being the gas guage) with our MC just on my say-so even though they probably couldn't have seen them happen.

They diagnosed it as a sending unit giving incorrect readings, I think.

And they loaned me a nice BRG MCSa Convertible on a day with nice weather

My 2004 actually read 1/4 tank but was out of gas. Ever hear of this problem?
