MINI Cooper steering issue

Hi does anybody know what this problem is?

When I turn left at low speeds I can feel a slight jolt just under the steering wheel... It's hard to describe really but its almost like something metal is slipping.

I took it to 2 different mini garages and they both said there is nothing wrong with the steering column.. But this issue has only started happening since I had a new steering column fitted. As I said this strange issue only occurs when turning left and applying pressure to the steering wheel.

Anybody please help me figure out what this is as it's really annoying. I'm really at a loss because I can't keep paying the dealer just to tell me that its characteristics of the car when I know very well it's not.

thanks

I would have whoever installed the steering column go back and check all the joints. Sounds as if one of the knuckles are not lined up properly or is hitting the supports under the dash. They cannot just turn the wheel and find it, they will probably have to be in the car and looking under the dash while turning wheel. They can do that on a lift with 2 people working together.

My steering is doing that right now. It just started few days ago. I didn't get any work done to it so we probably don't have the same cause for the problem. I also just noticed that I have a small leak of some sort and am now thinking that I need power steering fluid. My jolting started when the weather got really cold here (Philly) and wonder if that has anything to do with it. Post when you find out the problem.

Mine had a clicking or popping feel to it over the summer. Brought it in and they replaced the column under warranty.
Might be similar to what you are feeling.

I have the same issue, except my dealer told me it was some insulation on a motor mount, so they added some, and since my last 3 visits they have not corrected the problem yet .

I am taking it in on Friday and I'll post what the dealer tells me. My issue seems to go away after I have been driving a while aka when my car is warm. We'll see.

Just got back from the dealer. My pump was broken. That is what was causing the jolting and clicking. They fixed it and so far it sounds much better. I guess it is not an issue of cold weather.

I just had my column replaced along with a new clutch. My steering wheel when locked would not actually lock, so they replaced it under warranty. Never seen this issue before, it sure as hell locks now, and tough to unlock.

Just top up the PS Fluid... problem solved... I'm a software engineer and I fixed it myself while not even the 2 Mini dealerships and 2 private mechanics could.. Maybe I should change my career..
