Yup that's a blown runflat; you need to replace it as soon as possible as the sidewall structure has internally delaminated. This happens to run-flats when you take a direct hit on huge sharp obstacles. Pay better attention next time to where you're going!

what worries me is what if that happens on the side toward the inside of the car. You would never know until it just blows out?

I'm surprised they aren't making you replace both fronts. One new tire and one old tire might confuse the electronic nannies...

I was gonna ask if the pressure sensor would detect it, the edmunds entry mentions it:
The low pressure warning light didn't come on until 30 miles after the injury occurred. When I checked the pressure, though, it was holding at about 4 psi over the cold spec.

That happened to me 2 weeks after picking up my new MCS last August. Hit a major league pot hole on I-75 in Detroit about 8 pm while it was raining heavily. The impact alone was jarring and I was lucky the only damage was a bump just like that one on the driverside front tire sidewall that we discovered later when I had the car closely inspected by my tuner.

I replaced the tire and went after my out of state MINI dealer to collect on my tire insurance. They worked with me until I got my reimbursement check. I was very happy that I bought the dealer recommended Tire Insurance.

By the way, the TPMS did not go off as there was no leak. Drove it like that for a week without really noticing the bump but definitely there was a slight vibration in the steering wheel which went away after the tire was replaced.

How much did it cost and how long does it last?

Better have that wheel checked as well. From the pic it looks like it may be bent.

You can feel a bubble in the tire, especially if its on the front tires. This damage is just another reason on top of weight that I went with the 16s.

They don't blow out unless you're being grossly negligent. The reason you need to replace it is since the sidewall plies have delaminated, there is no structural integrity in the sidewall anymore, so the tire will handle erratic. This is obviously a safety concern.

...an absolute great excuse to get rid of the awful runflats.

I rotated my tires this weekend, which threw off the TPMS.... and, yes, all my tires have air in them

I really wish I could just turn TPMS off completely. I can check my own tire pressure, thank ye kindly.

...if you're being grossly negligent, like I said in my previous post. Many R53 owners can attest to driving on "bubbled" runflats for much longer than the recommended 50 miles with no blow-out. If you have real information beyond fear tactics, please disclose it and help us all out.

Yep, it looks like the rim has a little inward bend in it (and scrape) just under/ahead of the bubble in the tire.
