I am glad we went the auto route with the Clubman.
Actually, I think the manual Getrags are very solid gearboxes. My beef with MINI manuals is the clutch. The OEM clutches don't seem to last past 25K-30K with normal, non-abusive driving.
Unless MINI gets serious about the quality and durability of their clutches in coming years, I think my next MINI, will be automatic as well.

That seems rather pessimistic, and doesn't jibe with what my friends have gone through.

Neither have I driven one, yet.
The ride is supposed to be less choppy due to the longer wheelbase. I have read handling is as good or in par to the R56 hardtop.
Will post my impressions when I get it.

I personally like it. Find it to be different. Believe it or not, haven't even seen the car in person but plan to do so in the coming days as my dealer already has 2 for sneak preview + test drive.
I have owned 3 MINIs so far, so I find the Clubman appealing and a little different from the std hatchback.
Some claim the car looks better in person and pics don't do it justice. We'll see.
The Clubman is not everyone's cup of tea, though.

There is a known issue with knocking at idle when in neutral that goes away if the clutch pedal is depressed even slightly. It has been attributed to either the dual-mass flywheel or the clutch thrust plate bearing. Replacing the entire transmission won't necessarily resolve the problem, which seems to be not terribly severe, despite sounding bad. My car has this issue.
There is also the 3-2 squeal, which I haven't experienced (thankfully).
Those are the only two common R56 tranny issues of which I am aware.

Same for me. It had a chirping noise out of the box. 1,000 miles on it now. Will get a new gearbox in a couple weeks.
