Weird Overheating

The car is fine while driving and I havent had any problems until now.

If i let it idle for 2 minutes or so the temperature skyrockets.

I shut it off, the fan continues to run, within 1-2 minutes the temperature falls just as quickly as it went up. Then I repeated the process with the same results.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

When was the last time the coolant was flushed and replaced? Doing so might not be a bad idea.

It the temp falls that fast, then it's probably a bad temp sensor. Make sure you are not low on coolant though. Coolant can heat up pretty fast, but it can't cool down in a couple minutes.
