Front De-fog Problems with Auto AC

It was a bit chilly out a couple days ago and the windows were getting foggy inside the car. I pressed the front de-fog button and cranked the heat up a bit and immediately the fan speed shot up to max. When I turned it down, it turned off the de-fog completely. I press the de-fog again and the fan speed shot up to max again.

Am I doing something wrong? This is the first time I have ever had to use the de-fog! It's not a huge issue for me living in Vegas, but it is rather annoying.

If you hit the defog button you get max fan and almost all of it to the windshield. If you want less you need to take it out of auto and select the defroster (the top of the three outlet selections) and whatever fan speed and temperature you want.
