On my way to AMVIV last Thursday morning my rear sunroof exploded. At first I thought something must have hit me but after looking at the car... not a scratch on her and the glass was pushed up, not down.
I've been searching and found similar situations on many types of cars.... but very few MINI's. I want to know if any other R56's have had this problem.

this is what they are telling you by doing this:
"hey...not ONLY won't we fix something that really of no problem to do at all, but WE don't want you to drive your car that you bought from US."
i guess they don't understand a parked mini (thats pretty much undrivable) with part of its protective roof missing is bad PR...
i hope things turn out for the better for you (and chili).

Okay so I went to the dealer to pick up my mini and would you believe they scuffed the bumper?? I don't know what happened but you could tell something hit the bumper!!!
The new sunroof looks good however they left some broken glass up in the roof so now when I corner a turn, I hear it slide to one side.
Aren't I lucky?!
Oh they'll fix it!!

They'll probably have to remove the whole headliner to get it all out of there. Have them make sure none of the glass got in the water drain lines too.

But it does sound like your car is extremely well-sealed, i.e., no way for the air to expand when you close your door. I'd bet if someone were in the car when you shut the door like that, their ears would "pop."
I wonder if outside air vents are closed/blocked in some way? It really seems impossible that the car could be that airtight, but who knows? When I shut the doors on our LandCruiser, the exterior vents in the rear briefly pop open, so I would guess that if they weren't there something else would have to give.
Good luck finding out the problem.

Yes the windows go down then you open the door but when you shut the door they go up. I can't tell if the roof pops before the windows go up or after.
Good news... I got that darn piece of glass out so now there is no noise!
Ahhh!!!!

$731 including parts, labor & tax. On the brighter, side my insurance company is going to cover it so I only have to pay my deductible!
Thank you for letting my know your sunroof pops too!!

My sunroof pops up also when you shut the door. It doesn't seem like much of an issue to me. MINIs are probably very airtight. The window drop feature is more to clear the top gutters than anything else. if you notice the window gaskets already touch the glass when the window is in the dropped position effectively sealing the car. My '73 VW bug's doors are hard to close becasue of how airtight they are and never had an exploding window issue. They should have come up with the window drop mechanism back then

I am enjoying my Mini more than any other car I have owned.
However. BMW's "concept" of product support and taking care of the customer leave a great deal to be desired. I have been looking at the Clubman, but then I think about all the horror stories I have read about here!
The business with the mushrooming strut towers comes to mind. It occurs on quite a few BMW's, they need to get a clue about product liability and taking responsibility.
At least it wasn't raining when that occured!

Believe we just had a similar occurence. The rear sunroof on our 2007 MC exploded when my girlfriend closed the rear hatch. It was parked outside and my first instinct was that something had landed on the roof and cracked it, but after hearing your story I'm begining to think it may have been faulty glass that broke due to the pressure. Will push Mini to replace it on warranty, as we have only had the car for 2 weeks and no modifications (tint or otherwise) have been made. Not expecting much at this point, but fingers crossed.
