Shaking mirrors - has anyone noticed?
#27
Phew... Some others notice
I'm glad that others have noticed and I don't have to go to the eye doctor to get my eyes tightened in their housing. I guess my original post led to some confusion between housing and glass, but it is just the glass that is shaking.
I have become accustomed to it over the last 3 weeks and I do not mind it now. It's just a little vibration, but I may not be able to tell if a T-Rex is chasing me by vibrations in the glass, but rest assured, objects in the mirror are still closer than they appear.

Update after returning from visit 3 from the dealer on this issue. At this point everything to do with the driver side mirror save the door has been replaced to no avail. Bonus points to the service manager for noting that this is not all in my head and that he has witnessed it. They went around to three other MINIs on the lot to confirm that this was not the norm. He is currently scheduling a visit with a body shop, as he suspects that there may be a missed weld on the plate that the mirror housing attaches to, or some issue within the door itself that is the culprit. The assurances that this shouldn't be a difficult fix once the issue is found was comforting.
...so, fourth time is the charm? Let us hope.

Back from the body shop today. From how I understand the explanation, the plate within the door that the mirror housing bolts into was welded slightly out of position. It was adjusted about 2 1/2mm and the mirror is now rock solid. A significant bump will still result in movement, but no more near continuous wobble while traveling down the freeway.

I had the same problem, mostly on the driver's side wing mirror of our '08 Clubman S. The glass started to shake even traveling on a smooth road. Upon inspecting the actual wing mirror assembly, it is attached to the metal door by two Torx 30 screws. The screws, if not properly torqued down, will cause the mirror glass to vibrate even if the car is idling. Now, I don't know what is the proper torque specification for these Torx screws, but seems to me with the constant opening/closing of the door and the normal day to day body vibrations, these screws tend to losen up a bit.
But this is definitely an issue with the second gen MINIs. The wing mirrors on my 2005 R53 S are rock solid and never vibrate, ever. You wanna know why? Because MINI went cheap on the 2nd gen cars. The wing mirrors on the R53 are held by 3 Torx 30 screws instead of 2 like in the R56 and R55. BIG DIFFERENCE. My R53 rides a lot harder than the Clubman S and in 4 years and 55K miles of motoring the wing mirrors don't vibrate, not even with the Powerflex bushings I had installed back in January.
The wing mirror assemblies in the R53 feel more solid unlike those of the newer cars. I think second gen MINI owners should consider purchasing a cheap set of Torx screwdrivers (I have Husky brand set of 8 purchased at Home Depot) and tighten those Torx 30 wing mirror screws twice a year or every 6 months as preventive maintenance.
