2nd Hand DME

I have conflicting reports, so I was hoping to get a definite educated answer once and for all.

Is it possible to program a used DME for a another MINI within the same model, age, etc?

Sounds simple enough right? I know that if it is possible, it must be done by a dealer, but that is where things start to get messy. If you had it done, where, who?!?!

The DME has also been referred to as:

1.) ECU
2.) ECM
3.) EMS / EMS2000

Discuss.

Hey Waylen, any specifics on what prevents this? The only alternative is a new DME?

Thanks.

if you are asking if you can re-key another ecu to your car the answer is yes but you will need the dealer to do it or have an autologic tool

So Jan you are saying that I can have a used DME "re-keyed" or reprogrammed to be used in my car?

Is this a one way process, as in once you program the 2nd DME the 1st will no longer operate, or does this result in 2 operational DME for the same car?

I think you can see where I am going with this.

Ok, so it is a one way process then. To restate:

1.) A used DME can be re-programmed for an existing car
2.) There can be only one operational DME / car

Is there any special trick to getting this to work, or is this a standard process that any MINI service center should be able to perform?

Thanks again.
