How to fix sunroof rattle
by any chance any one has found a way to fix the sunroof rattle?
the noise seems to be coming from the rear sunroof, the one corner (right rear) doesn't seem to close completely and is causing the noise.. if the sunroof is slightly opened, the noise is gone..
just wondering if any one has a fix for it, if I can avoid a trip to the dealer that will be nice..!!
thanks,

My rattle is in that area too, but its coming from the plastic frame. When it starts rattling I reach back and press it a little and it stops. I tried stuffing some small pieces of felt strips between the frame and headliner and thought it was fixed but it started again today. Does anyone have a good fix for this ?

If you have an R56, both panels will tilt but only the front will slide back.

You probably just dont look back when its open... they both tilt to the "vent" position but only the front one slides back.... funny question my friend had... "why doesnt the back one open up also?" then i asked him, where did the front panel go? RIGHT ON TOP OF THE BACK ONE!! then he was like... oh... i guess that makes sense haha.
anyway, i had a problem with my sunroof as well. The back panel would make a vibrating noise when it was open but the front one was fine. I brought the MINI in for this and another problem and they tried adjusting it but nothing worked. They had to eventually change out the sunroof cassette which solved the problem. The bill would have been 2200 bucks!!
luckily its all under warranty.

My sunroof were completely silent. Then the dealer installed the rubber stops to keep the sunshades from sliding back on their own. After this, my sunroof had a very annoying rattle when hitting any kind of bump (sport suspension, runflats). Later when I had the car back to fix a paint issue, I had them check out the rattle. It turned out to be a washer on a screw that wasn't fully tight. When they installed the rubber stops, they remove the glass from the top. They missed fully tightening one of the screws. You might want to make sure all the screws you can find up there are tight. I'm not really sure which one it was or I would post a picture. Just something else you guys might consider.
I get the same dash "creaking" over rough roads. You can kind of push/squeeze the outside vents and make it creak more. It's kind of funny in a modern car they can't seem to get the dash panels to not make noise. It tend to refer to it as "my car is being British" today whenever I hear this type of noise. I've pulled apart some of the dash and think they just don't use clips that are tight enough compared to removing panels in other brands of cars.

This fixed the rattle i had:
take 2 rubber bump stops (i think any hardware store or electronic store should have em, they are about a 1/4 inch with an adhesive back), put one on either front wind screen-the side that faces back when they are up (youll have to move around the placement for what works for you, this worked for me). Havent had a single rattle since. Beats stuffing things up there to baffle it!
Hope it works!

You should check out the Zippee Shade website
Here is their website http://zippeegear.com/documents/products.html. I've got one in my Mini and I love it. I was debating on either tinting it or putting a piece of cardboard in it and thank GOD for this item. Cheers....

I love my sun roof - had it tinted "limo" and that takes care of the sun blast. Great ventilation cracked open and the extra light makes me happy. Mine has an annoying rattle that is fixed by opening or closing the sliding "sunscreen" - can't remember which way to move it, but moving it ends the squeak coming from that area.

I've had sunroofs in my last 2 cars and both times I loved having it. I use them all the time despite living in a place where 8 months of the year its cold. However, when I ordered my MINI, I though about all the sunroof threads I saw on NAM and decided against it. Also, I didn't want the extra weight right at the top of the vehicle and the MINI's sunroof isn't exactly small...

Have had mine for nearly ten months now, never the first rattle or squeak.
I usually have it open, but when closed, it is silent and completely sealed.
I use an 1800 PSI Pressure Washer to clean and it has never leaked a drop.
Without that great sunroof, I would never have bought the MINI Coupe.

fixing sunlight problem
buy a piece of vinyl (oversized) from your local signage shop. they are the only place to find vinyl wider than 24". i think you need at least 40".
slap it on, and enjoy no sunlight when closed. also, i got white to match my white roof, and it looks awesome.
should only cost about $25 - $50 total.
