Clunking

The following was from the MINI2 forum. How many here have experienced this? I'd like to obtain as many responses as possible so that if the dealer says it's normal or they all do that, I can at least provide some evidence suggesting it is not normal (assuming many don't have this problem, anyways). Thanks.

"My Cooper is only four weeks and 600 miles old. I've noticed that if you take your foot off the brake quite quickly it clunks quite badly - drives you nuts on cross-country drives.
The dealer says that they all do it. What do you think?
I have also had some clutch/drivetrain issues - judder when cold and clunk/slack/driveline shunt when changing up from 2-3, 3-4 etc and rengaging the clutch, but only noticeable on long trips and when engine is hot. Feels like wear in the CV joint/drivetrain, but dealer thinks it is slack in the dual-mass flywheel and says "see how it goes".
Anyone else spotted this? Steve"

I just brought my car to the dealer and rode around with the shop foreman. I get the clink, as I call it, when I let up on the clutch when I shift. He said it is due to the 'gear lash', whatever that means, and that MINI's have more than most. It's noticable on quiet roads with the windows down. The dual mass flywheel sounds like a pretty good theory too, to me. The foreman said they all did it though, so that's good enough for me. I REALLY don't want them to touch my baby.

I have a clunk between 2-3 and 3-4 as well when the car is warm. There also is the occasional clicking sound when engaging and disengaging the clutch. The dealership told me much of the sounds were normal, although the "clunk" was possibly from a loose motor mount. It is being replaced next week. I'll let you know if this repair eliminates any of my clunk/click sounds.

Mine still clunks abnormally once driven more than 20 minutes - received the good ol' "could not duplicate" and "sounds normal" nonsense. Never seen a new car sound so old so quickly. Loose flywheel? Bad motormount? Bad spring? Missing bolts? Did you really look... and listen? I'm growing more unimpressed with MINI and dealer service daily. Greg

Sad but true. Mine spent, at one point, 6 weeks in the shop to get the "it's normal" answer. I am hoping that this fixes it so i can rub it on everyone's noses! Even the country's technical manager for Mini Mexico, who was involved in the process and was the one to give me the lame answer!
