replacing starter on 04 mcs... help asap please!
Car is at the shop now. The problem IS the starter. I asked him "is it anything I did" (the system, etc) he said I'm not 100 percent sure, but IMO I think it just went bad on you.
Either way, I have my used starter I bought on ebay from a wrecked 2002 MINI coming in tomorow I believe.
I asked what he thinks about using that, vs a new one.
He said I can bench test it, verify its not locked up, but that doesn't mean its not gonna handle the load when its installed and I start the car.
I think I'm gonna take the chance (given the fact that it bench tests ok) and use that one (cost me 20 bux)
To have the shop buy the starter new, and labor to install it, comes to a total of over 800 dollars.
In general, what are the major steps to removing and installing a new starter? I know the header needs removing, right?
Someone please help me out, so I can make a desision...
Thanks.

Major Steps - Starter Replacement
1. Switch off ignition.
2. Disconnect battery.
3. Remove exhaust manifold.
4. Remove starter motor heat shield.
5. Learn how starter wires are routed. Disconnect wires to starter.
6. Remove starter mounting bolts and lift out starter.
7. Installation is the reverse of Removal.
(Did I forget anything, NAM'ers?)
Do you want the bolt tightening torques?

I dont know what the bolt looks like, but if you have to break down and buy a "universal joint" for your wrench, they are like 10 bucks and can help you out in a tight situation.
