Broken off a strut mount stud

OK 1st post on this site: did something stupid while installing Craven strut tower reinforcement plates; over tightened one bolt (seemed to be turning freely) and sheared it off with about 1/4" remaining above the sheet metal. The other two large Craven nuts/adapters are properly torqued down (25 ft/lbs) and the reinforcement plate is in place. Its Saturday evening, so I won't be able to get a replacement strut mount mail ordered for a few days. So the question is what is the danger in driving the car as-is for a couple of days? Also, is this a common Autozone-type of part (front strut mount)? Lastly, I'm assuming there's nothing MINI-unique about getting the strut mount replaced/installed at a typical tire service center, right? Thanks.

I didn't have a torque wrench when I installed mine and this makes my blood run cold. I could have done the same so easily. Stars were aligned right for me.

Sorry. Can't help with your questions. I know that there are detailed instructions in at least one thread here on NAM for installing camber plates. That requires you to take the strut loose, so maybe you could replace it yourself.

rrcaniglia I noticed you're in Hartselle. Do you have a non-dealer mechanic that knows MINI's nearby (I'm in Athens)? Someone mentioned that Century BMW doesn't work on MINI's, but I haven't had a chance to check that out.

2 bolts are better than no bolts, right?

Yep. My initial thought is that I should be OK for the short term; but, I was looking for those who know more about the MCS to weigh in...we'll see!

Pull the strut out. Pound out the broken stud with a hammer. Replace the stud & reassemble.

The local Huntsville MINI group says there is a shop in Huntsville, but I don't have the name. SJOLLY is the organizer of the group and knows the place.

I'm still in the Nashville MINI warranty club.

I second this motion. The stud is pressed into the strut mount, hammer it out and put a bolt in until you can get the proper stud.
