Excessive wind noise from closed sunroof
#4
Mine had a strong wind noise and I'm pretty sure it's from the sunroof. Yesterday I took it in to get sport stripes put on so I had the service department looked into it.
When all is done, the rep told me that the sunroof wind noise is a known problem and they took care of it per bulletin. I believe they put a seal of black goo around the sunroof. It made a difference although the noise hasn't completely go away. It's defintely better.
I will have to drive it on highway more to verify if it's completely gone after the seal is completely dried.
If you have the same problem with the wind noise from sunroof at high speed, take it in to the dealer.

Absolutely no Sunroof related wind noise (when closed) at high speed.
Also no leaks from frequent Pressure Washing (1800 PSI).
Some have reported wind noise from upper area of windshield as well.
Couple feet of plastic or rubber tubing can be used as a 'stethoscope' to locate source of a wind noise.

I just wanted to add that I also get wind noise from my sunroof while going faster than 50-60mph especially if it is a windy day. I took it to the dealer and the foreman I test drove with told me that there's no whistling so it wasn't a leak. He said it sounded like all the other R56s he'd driven. I'm taking it in to get it examined nonetheless.

Just got a brand new 2009 JCW and yes indeed I am hearing the same wind noise. It happens at about 60-70mph. I am going to get it taken care of when I get my tires rotated. I also have a 2008 base cooper as well with no sunroof and I get a different whine at about 65mph, to me it sounds like it is the grill or something on the front of the car, has anyone heard this as well???

When I took mine in, they tested it for leaks and so forth and found none. Unless there's something actually wrong with the sunroof, I don't think there's anything they can do to help you out.

the r56 sunroof does have some noise, BUT ive noticed MANY are mis-adjusted from the factory and do make noise above 50-60ish.
Pushing up on the sunroof fixes this because the front edge of the glass is supposed to be somewhat down and the back end upward. same with the 2nd glass panel. having the front edge of the front or rear glass up will catch wind and create noise. there are specific measurements for the height of each glass panel.
take it in to the dealer and have it fixed. if the dealer is any good it should be done in about 30-45 min. they wont be DEAD silent like a hardtop r56 but it should be somewhat close.

just picked up our pw/w yesterday and drove it on the highway. it was so loud I couldn't hear the person talking next to me. So I took it to the dealer today. They confirmed it and stated it was the sealant on the sunroof.
While they were fixing it, I got to drive another mini and took it down the highway. It was noticeably more quiet so I was able to verify that indeed there was something wrong with the one we had.
I'd encourage you to have it checked out if the noise level makes it difficult listening to a normal level speaking. We even turned off the radio. . .

A few months after I got Lewis the sunroof started sqeaking horribly. Dealer lubed something and was all good for a while. This fall it started to whistle as others have described. Favorite MINI Tech knew exactly what the problem was and fixed it straightaway, no more whistling, but it does squeak again now that it's cold.

I have the noise issue as well with my sunroof. The situation looks exactly as described below in this quote. I need to confirm that my dealer can adjust the sunroof so that it sits properly before making the 200+ mile round trip. The other "fix" with the seal does not seem like a 100% fix to me....

Sunroof Cover
If BMW would have put a solid sliding shade or cover like most every car make so that the sunlight could be blocked out, the noise would be minimized. When I picked my Clubman up and saw that there was no opaque cover I was very dissapointed. I had a Subaru and an F-150 and both had sunroofs, to cut out the wind noise (when the sunroof was closed) I would close the shade. Those shaes have insulating properties.
Has anyone tried that Zippy shade that I've seen on ebay?

That's what I did right after delivery of the vehicle...made a world of difference for $50 and looks OEM...no shades to deal with.
