Fuel Pump
At 85K my R50 fuel pump acted up and would not run, leaving me dead in the water - well a parking lot really, in the course of addressing the issue over the last few days I wanted to share with the NAM Fam what I learned.
When the pump stops running don't call the tow truck. Instead turn off the key, lay down next to your MINI on the drivers side, reach under the MINI in front of the rear tire and smack or punch the black plastic gas tank. Try to start MINI if MINI starts it may or may not run fine for day's or only hours.
Take it to a repair shop, do not pass go and do not collect $200.00 even thou it will be helpful, for repair.
This is NOT an easy DIY job and if the tank is more then 3/4 full drive till it's 1/2 or less full.
This job is the job that proves Tech's are not expense, they are PRICELESS!
I had the good fortune to watch my pump be replaced. OMG! PIA!
If you do it you will be covered with gas up to but not limited to your elbows.
You will need to be good at working in the dark and if you had Lego's as a kid that will prove to be helpful too.
Oh yea, there's WIRES in our GAS tanks too. I know it's all safe, but really wires in the gas tank?
Bottomline;
When your pump goes, smack it, pickup a 6 pack, drive to the shop, pay the bill with a BIG smile on your face and give the 6 pack to the tech.

I don't agree. Anybody capable can replace the fuel pump. Took me an hour. The only pain in the a$$ was putting the retaining ring back on. You need to use your foot to put downward pressure while spinning the retaining ring. Total cost. Pump for $240 and one hour of my time. Didn't miss a commute or an hour of work.
