Wiper Alignment Adjustment

Wiper Alignment Adjustment
About 8 months ago I burnt out my wiper motor (definitely my fault, as I clipped the switch getting out of the car when it was covered in >1/2" of ice), and rather than pay $600-$700 that the dealer quoted me, I did it myself with the directions provided in another thread.
However, after I replaced the motor, there's a slight gap between where the wiper blades are supposed to overlap at the top in their range of motion. It's only a small area where the passenger-side blade should move slightly more towards the driver's side, but it has the unfortunate effect of causing a slight amount of water to not get pushed to the side or bottom of the windshield. When I'm going less than 45 MPH, this water trails down the windshield rather than getting blown away by the air.
I tried adjusting it by simply changing the position that the linkage was bolted down at; unfortunately, the range of motion is the exact same and now my windshield wipers like to come to a complete stop about 3" away from where they should. How is this controlled, and what could I do about it in order to adjust the alignment of my wipers and get them to stop at the appropriate place?
