Transmission repair / rebuild / replace

The MINI seems to have NO fifth gear !
I had heard more stories about loosing 2nd any other similar experiences with 5th.
Someone somewhere posted that they had sourced parts to rebuild an R50/ Cooper ( 2001 - 2004 ) tranny ?

Anyone have or know of Used anywhere ?

Thanks,

Please explain what you mean by it seems to have no fifth gear?

Can you not get it to go into fifth shifter position at all?

Can you get it into fifth but when you let the clutch out there is no forward motion?

You can get it into fifth but it makes a lot of noises?

Do the other shifter positions go in and out smoothly or is there a lot of slop to the shifter?

Please add more details.

Thanks Don, that provides options for a replacement or the repair route.

The only problem is that it has to come out *before* an complete assessment can be done.

At that price replace might be the easiest option...

Why don't you try and diagnose the problem first and provide the symptoms as previously asked?
Could be something as simple as a shifter cable.

If you have a 2002-2004 R50 Cooper hardtop, you car came equipped with the flaky and unreliable 5-speed Midland Gears. 2005-2006 R50 hardtops and 2005-2008 R52 MC Cabrios were fitted with the most robust 5-speed Getrag gearbox (Like the MCS gearbox less one gear).

I believe you can retrofit a 5-speed Getrag on any pre-2005 R50 MC hardtop, but don't quote me on it. If your stock Midland Gears transmission is kaput, and you love the car and want to keep it, I would explore the possibility of retrofitting the Getrag 5-speed instead.
