I've gone thru 3 hood scoops, and now the 4th one, even with heat shield, is on its way out. Mini needs to come up with a better fix.

On another note...I heard the 'death rattle' last week for the first time so I had them check it while it was in for the hood scoop. Sure enough, they had to replace the chain and tensioner. $1,400 total charged to the warranty...yikes!

Yikes...how many miles since you added the heat shield? The reason I ask is that I have a friend who had the heat shield put on and he has done over 30k with no warpage...

My car had day one warpage with less than 100 miles on it brand new. I had it fixed several months ago and have had no warpage with the new heat shield so not sure why yours is already warping again.

Those of you who've gone in for service, are they adding a heat shield as part of the "repair"?

I've been calling different dealerships to find out if they'll add the part, none of them could answer. I also couldn't find any reference to it on realoem, so I'm not sure if I should purchase one from WMW, or hope they include it during service.

Here in Vancouver, I was told that they are automatically adding the shield with every warranteed scoop replacement. It could be a dealership descision vs MINI directive though. Not sure.

They added the heatshield on mine when I took it in for service back in May. I was told that that is part of the warranty service.

I had mine in just this past week for replacement of the warping hood scoop. In my case, I went in armed with the part number for the OEM heat shield (51 48 2 183 986), and requested that it be installed when the scoop was replaced. They have allegedly installed the heat shield under warranty, but I'm out of town at the moment (my dad picked up the car for me), so I haven't laid eyes on the work yet.

Same issue, im still under warranty so they will replace it for now. I am strongly considering purchasing the nm eng titanium heat shield following the new hood scoop install. high heat temps are a b*tch

Actually, if they replace it, they should also install the heat shield under your hood. That's what they did for mine over a year ago and I haven't had any issues since.

Agreed. Specifically request that your dealer also install the OEM heat shield (P/N 51 48 2 183 986) as part of the warranty work.

What's the 'usual' turnaround time for this repair? I presume it's a two trip repair (fault accepted/part ordered/sprayed, then installed on second visit).

I'm stuck in between two dealers (one 50 miles north, the other 60 miles south) so I will be carefully selecting the agony of the trip for my 2009 R55 before the warranty gets much closer to expiration.

My dealer charged me $38 for the heat shield, no matter that I said if I didn't get it they'd be replacing it again. He said that BMW wouldn't pay for it.

That was the case for me; I'd be prepared for a "two-tripper" repair... However, the dealer did offer me a chrome replacement scoop rather than a painted one as a no-cost replacement; but I prefer the monochrome look, so I declined and waited for them to paint one to match. For a chrome scoop, if one is in stock, I think that would be a "one-stop" repair.

I suggest that, at best, your dealer didn't bother to even try submitting it to MINI/BMW; or at worst, they just flat-out lied to you. The heat shield part and its installation were covered under warranty in my case.

Thanks! I will begin to plan accordingly.

Agreed. Something fishy there!
