High Pressure Fuel Pump Replacement

Don't "hope" that they check it out when cold, TELL them you have a problem starting the car when cold, and make sure that's the way it's written up. Insist that it be tested that way or you won't pay a diagnostic fee. After all, how could they diagnose something if it's not the same conditions as when the problem occurs?

My HPFP has been replaced twice and it might be working towards a 3rd. I'll know this weekend when I visit my dealer. But, both times the failure mode was different from what has been discussed. I did not have cold starting problems or surging. What I noticed was something that felt like is misfire. Occasionally you could feel it, but you could always hear it. It went from a maybe once a month thing to hearing it a couple of times in a 15-20 minute trip.
My dealer tested the fuel system and found that while the pump would hold pressure when running, as soon as it was shut down, the pressure would rapidly drop by a significant amount. Evidently it is supposed to hold pressure for a time and gradually drop off. That was the first time, but I don't remember specifically what they found the 2nd time.

Did you ever find out? I'm not sure if mine has ever been replaced. Bought car used and don't have the service records because Mini San Antonio refused to print them for me. I don't want to pay anything to the dealership because I have third party warranty that will cover it minus deductible at another shop.

I don't have my '07 anymore, so I can't check the letter I kept in the glovebox, but as I recall, the warranty was increased to 120,000 miles or 10 years. Either way, the warranty on MINI parts was 2 years, at least on dealer-installed stuff, so if you're having a problem I would check on that.

Unless something changed, it should be 10 years, 120k. The warranty is transferable, according to the letter I got, which is why I left it in the car. I know I would have taken it out if it had been "first owner" or a shorter period, but again, it's been over a year since I sold so something might have changed.

My 2009 JCW has this problem. The dealer and MiniUSA both said it was Not covered. VIN out of the range of cars covered. I asked nicely, and wined just a bit and the service tesk person talked to the service manager who in turn taked to MiniUSA. They cm back and offered 50%. I took it but not sure if I should keep fighting. Any thoughts?

2011 N18 MCS with 73k on the clock here. i just had my hpfp replaced for a second time under warranty. i wasn't sure what to expect when i dropped it off at the dealer. i let the service advisor know that it appears to be an issue with the hpfp again. he said if it is the hpfp, then i'm covered under warranty until 120k miles. if not, i'd have to pay $160 for the diagnosis. long story short, dropped off car at 12:20pm. car had hpfp replaced and was ready for pickup by 5pm. fwiw, the original hpfp was replaced around 42k miles. i guess the newer parts haven't fixed the issue.

Actually Mini did change the design in 2013 to a Bosch brand HPFP, but it will only fit certain 2013 models since the cam design on N18's is different. Stupid they didn't make it backwards compatible, Mini enjoys the rate the old HPFPs are flying of the shelves to recoup all the the money they lost with the old design.

ha, great news! glad that worked out for you (and me). funny thing is, i don't even drive the car anymore. i left it for my mother-in-law to use after i moved to the bay area. they brought it to their mechanic initially, and he suspected that it'd be the hpfp, but wasn't 100% sure, so he didn't touch it. on my last visit to socal, i dropped the car off at crevier with the service advisor i've always used, and they took care of it. i'm glad we didn't pay some $1500 for someone to replace that thing!
