I just picked my 2010 up with the Redwood Lounge, and it doesn't look as bad as some of the others.

Hey MINIdean,
Thats what I would expect... I'm sure they will fix the problem. The service guy said they wouil replace the slip cover.....I would like new seats as I can't imagine the dealership mechanics doing upholstery.
Thanks for the pics.

Had some nicks on the side of the driver's seat. I said it was poor quality materials and the dealer agreed to give me a new seat, but it turned out to only be a new cover. They put the first on on and the fit was so bad I would not take it, so back went the old one and a new cover ordered. This one was better, but not right. They said to drive it a month and if it didn't get better with the summer heat I could bring it back. With some smoothing, streaching, pounding and the help of a heat gun and all is fine. The point of this story is:

New Seat = New cover

Do the folks at the dealership understand upholstery = No

2010 model sport seats are cloth on the back. All previous years sports seats where Plastic. This was specifically changed for 2010 model year and according to my dealer was because of the high number of complaints BMW/MINI was receiving about how easily scuffed/scratched the plastic became.

I am very surprised the dealership tried to install the seat cover. My last car, 2002 Accord Coupe, had a torn seat in one of the linings when I purchased the car new. The dealer ordered the seat cover, drove the car to an upholstery shop after it arrived, had them install it and billed Honda for the labor. The finished result was perect.

I figured, being a BMW dealer (the work was done on the BMW side), perhaps hey had someone that know how to do this. I was wrong.

Thats a pretty shocking story Jim. I think the 2009 have the vinyl backs also. The build on the 09's generally seems better.
Like I said before they should repalce both the front seats but when you start looking the tops of the back seats don't line up...the seat build on this vehicle are crappy plain and simple.

WATCH HOW ITS MADE YOU CAN SEE THAT A MINI SEAT ONLY GET 88 SECONDS PER STATION. also give the seat time to break in so that the leather will stretch out properly

No, no, it's naugahyde! It's better for the environment because they don't have to kill the naugas to get their... hydes.

Until I was corrected, I thought we had Naugahyde.

I found this at nauga.com:

The small chameleon-like animals known as Naugas™ have long been known as the source of beautiful and durable fabrics that look like fine, soft leather. And since Naugas shed their hydes without harm to themselves, the fabrics they help make came to be known as Naugahyde®, The Cruelty Free Fabric™.

And there I would have guessed it was a vinyl coated fabric However, we don't have Naugahyde, we have leatherette (if not leather or cloth). This is, of course, made from very small cows.

No, no. You guys have it all wrong. Leatherette are a crossbread animal. You can't get straight leatherette it has to be crossed with another animal. So you get Zebra leatherette or Crocodile leatherette. Even Cow leatherette as ran-o-mattic has pointed out.
I think Leatherette was invented by the Germans during WW2 probably something to do with Volkswagon and Hitler and the need for strong uniforms and hardwearing seats.

Oh, my bad. I was under the impression that no Naugas were harmed in the creation of my MINI's seats. Now I know that several (hundred) miniature cows/zebras/elephants/alligators had to be sacrificed, I'll never be able to look at it the same way... :(

My passenger seat had some creases in the seat back side bolster that looked pretty bad. They suggested I give it a month or so to smooth out. When that didn't work, they gladly replaced it. Almost two years later the seat looks like new. Rather than call, take your car to service, tell them you have a warranty issue with your seat and let them take it from there. A good dealer will do the right thing and replace your seat cover.

That is God awful. We spend WAYYY too much on these cars for ANYTHING to be wrong with them. I wouldn't have signed the papers for this thing, why did you? I went through Simone with a fine toothed comb before I accepted delivery. I didn't care how busy my MA was, this is a frakking expensive car that I have saved and waited for and it better be right!! I implore you to stay on their behinds until they make it right.

FWIW, just picked up a 2010 MC with sport leatherette seats and I'm pretty happy with them. They are more comfortable and so far seem to be of higher quality than the black panther leather on the 2006 MCSC I traded in.
