You need to have it checked out by service. This is called "limp" mode. Your MINI will be operating at half power till you get the problem resolved.

If you have a OBDII code reader you can reset all check engine lights and it will go away, but if you're not finding out what's causing it you're asking for trouble down the road.

i turned the mini around in the driveway and pointing downhill and restarted it...no engine light, and no limp mode. It drove fine for the hour drive to work.

I will take it over to the garage this morning and see what they can pull for a code.

I had the same thing happen as I was leaving work Tuesday evening (9800 miles on the odometer). Engine ran rough, like cylinders missing, and lots of gray exhaust, then the same yellow "engine operating in reduced mode" light came on. I was able to "limp" down to the dealership, they promptly took the car in (mechanics had already left for the day) and issued me a loaner. The next day they found the fuel pump was bad and replaced it no questions.

Mine did it when it was 14 degrees outside. I let it warm up and then shut the car off and turned it back on and everything was fixed.

I am believing this to be the problem that is in the "sticky" regarding frozen throttle body...so mods can delete this topic and i will follow the sticky thread.

thanks!!

I live in the south where it does not get as cold as where you guys live, but the problem is universal whether the temps are cold or whether they are hot. I've had mine 2009 clubman s act up twice in the first 36,000 miles. Sevice people at TWO different Mini dealerships have said the a poor high pressure fuel pump is causing all of our problems and until they re-design or get another supplier, we are going to continue to have problems.
