Hello everyone,

This is not exactly under the bonnet, but it's inside the car

Recently, when I ask the GPS to look up information in the area (like restaurants or something) the GPS turns off and then comes back on again. I tried many times at different points and in different siuations, but still the same results.

It works when you put in an address and have you look for it, but if you go to information on location (or destination) it turns itself off and it's getting really irritating.

I have an 03 and I believe it's a cd not a dvd, but I could be mistaken.

Thanks for any help or info,

Louay

I haven't had this issue. I would suggest a trip to the dealer is in order.

However, I have the restaurant x's on my GPS and can't make them go away.

Anyone ?????

That is why I carry a cell phone and a map. They are a lot cheaper and more accurate.

Updating to the latest NAV software (3-61) should keep the 'rebooting' from happening. I had issues with my NAV system before the update (would not show anything for about 2 minutes or more, no MINI logo on startup). The update fixed most of it, but the boot time was still a bit slow, and only rarely would I see the logo when starting. I had the electrical system apart to install front and rear foglights and an alarm system and had the battery disconnected for a while, once I was finished the NAV has been working perfectly, showing the logo when opening the door and booting almost instantly. I think a 'cycling of the power' is needed to fully realize the updated software.

Mine did the same thing when I first got it and they had a update for it and it fixed it (that was over 9 months ago) and just this past month they updated the software again (to help with startup time in cold weather) so just call your dealer cause it only takes a several minutes to update. Enjoy.

The "update" is simply buying the new cd from BMWusa right? I'm still using the one that came with the car.

I'll talk to Steve when I have time and let him know that the nav is doing that...I'll also tell him what you guys said. Hopefully he'll take care of it.

Thank you..that helps a lot

>>What are restaurant x's?

You can ask the NAV for restaurants and hotels in a area and they show up
on the NAV screen and x's ( really knife & fork crossed ). I only used this feature once to show someone else and now they just won't go away. Jon

No it's not. It's actually firmware update to the Nav computer and is independent of the map disks. There should be no charge to get this done, or if your feeling confident, go over to the ICE forums on MINI2, there's a whole thread on doing this including links to the upgrade file.

As for whether you have a DVD or CD system....

If your car was built before March '03 you have a CD system, after March '03 DVD system. But I believe some of the early delivery DVD systems came with a CD map instead of the DVD. Why is this impotant you ask? The DVD covers the entire country, the CD a geographic region, if you leave the region covered by the CD, only major roads and cities are displayed. You can tell which you have by just ejecting the disk from the drive and checking the label.

It's possible you have a CD, however the NavTech maps used are notorious for having huge holes in their coverage. With that it mind it's entirely possible you have a DVD and drove into one of NavTech's holes.
