76k miles bad catalytic converter under warranty?

On my '06 Cooper the catalytic converter seperated like a coffee can with an open lid! Needless to say it don't sound too good!

I hear the emissions system is warrantied to 80k. I am in California if it matters. Will I have any issues with the dealer in getting this covered under warranty? I have 76,000 miles on the car. I didn't see any damage under the car.

What causes this? A friend told me it probably got plugged up and the prssure split it.

Is it ok to drive 20 miles to the dealer? It's been leaky for a week and last night finally broke completely apart at the seam.

The cat is covered under a federally mandated 8 yr/80k mile warranty... every car, every brand sold in the USA must have this coverage. You should have no problem as long as they don't find anything that would indicate it was damaged from some type of abuse.

I believe it's warranted for 7yrs or 70k from another thread someone mentioned MINI USA extended it to 100k. But either way in CA it's required to be covered so you should have no problem at the dealer. Other than noise and probably releasing bad stuff into the air your car should be ok for 20mi to the dealer.

As others have said. Warranty should be no problem. Trip to the dealer - noisy, but won't hurt anything.

Thanks guys, Appreciate the info This will put my mind at ease I really can not spare the kind of $$$ this would cost from the dealer. If for some reason they turn me down I will do it myself.

My experience with exhaust manifold bolts is they are a pain to get off. Anyone ever do this and have any advice? More than likely I will put a stock manifold back on I have no inkling of making it sound any "better"

I've only seen a couple of these, but you shouldn't have any problem with warranty.

Pretty sure it is different in CA. Check your service and warranty book.

Here's a government/epa site that states 8 years/80,000 miles on major emission control components (catalytic converter is one of these).

Update. John, the service advisor @ Brecht took care of it for me. It's done and ready to be picked up.

Excellent service by them btw. They have always been good to me.
