What is the easiest way to time the pistons and valves? I have the head off right now so I can easily set #1 to TDC, but how do I set up the head in relation to that? Is it simply the arrow on the cam gear facing up? Thanks!
Did you leave the timing chain on the crank sproket and mark your cam sprocket and chain. If so you just line the cam dowel up in the cam sprocket and you're good to go.

Unfortunately I did but my mark wore off. I would be 1000x more worried if the car was an interference motor. Also the chain slipped into the block a couple times so I'm not sure if the bottom skipped a link at all .
Plasticknives talk to Dr. Mike of Texas Speedworks. He recently did a build that cropped up on another forum. He'll have some timing tips for you. It's probably time for a degree wheel and dial indicator though.
I just looked in the Bentley manual and it seems I just have to line up the copper links on the chain with marks on the crank and cam sprocket. Seems easy enough.
