My 2003 Cooper S power steering pump has been on its way out for the past 6 months (very loud noise) this week I had planned to drop the pump and have it rebuilt.

Today I went out to the car and turned the key and noticed the powersteering pump is turning on and off intermittently with the key turned to ACC and the car off.

The pump will turn on for 1 second, off for .5, on for 1-2, off for 1, no rhythm just random sequence of on and off.

When the car is on the pump runs constantly and I have never had the powersteering cut out.

Is my wiring damaged now too, or is this something that will be fixed when the pump is rebuilt?

Any suggestions?

 

are you sure its the PS pump? if you have xenons, the headlight aiming makes a groaning sometimes.

 

It is 100% the powersteering pump, it is on its way out an extremely loud. Removing it today to get rebuilt.

Anyone know if a rebuild will solve this issue?

Should I check the wiring / relays?

I am most concerned about a fire starting.

 

My pump would continue to run with the key in the off postion. I sent the pump to BBA for a rebuild and that solved the problem. The control module is part of the pump, and they either repair or replace it during the rebuild. Sounds like the module could be going South in yours.

That is exactly the info I was looking for, dropping the pump off at BBA tomorrow
