Radiator Fan Replacement

My low speed fan is out, and high speed only works. The solution, as I have found out (from these forums), is to replace the fan housing.

I have a May 2002 MCS, which I believe means the PS fan and Radiator fan are on the same circuit.

Apparently eBay Fan's are good enough for folks, but I want to be sure I get the right one. Since my MCS was built BEFORE Mini switched to separate PS/Radiator circuits, would the fan assembly I need have one or two electrical connectors?

I guessing two... can I get an amen?

If you want to go that route than I suggest RockAuto; their website is fairly comprehensive re: year of manufacture, etc., and you should get the version you need.

Your production date will determine which fan you need.
Some of the auto parts sites list which fan you need...and will reference a production date. Check you door jamb...and buy the right fan.
Unless your car was modified the PS and rad fan are both on the same fuse...but the PS fan connector is on ALL the fans...you simply don't plug it in if the mod has been done on the car.
The difference between the fans is that a relay was moved off the fan on the early cars...and onto the car....so the connectors/operation are different...so you just need to buy the right fan.
I believe the change was made in February 2003. Just buy the one you need...look at rock-auto with your production date....there will be 2 part #'s...a before and an after feb 2003.

Not to hijack the thread but I've got the exact same problem on my 02 MCS where I need to replace the radiator fan. I see on Rockauto that they show a TYC brand @ $89 and a Sherman brand @ $106. Does anyone have any experience with either of these brands?

I have the tyc..going into my second year, no issues. My local Mini guy also installs the tyc too!! Side by side, they are the same. Some suppliers of the tyc fan sell it with a lifetime warrenty.....depends where you buy it...but at half the cost, less actually, than the OEM, it is a great deal even if it has none.
Just be sure to get the correct one based on your production date.
I have seen a few places selling a " single speed" replacement fan...IMO, stay away from it...the oem is dual speed for a reason.

Have you looked at the thread" low speed fan resistor we need soloution", as on page 5 there is an inexpensive soloution to fix the problem without taking the car apart. Cost seems to be 20 to 30 dollars with about 1/2 hours work.

I've been watching the thread but I may have to move before all the details (wire sizes, which ones to slice into, etc. are finalized.

I've been watching it too and waiting for the details. Basically, the old resistor has failed "Open", so if you know the correct two wires ... cut into them and bridge in a new resistor.

Waiting on the exact wiring details before I begin ...

It takes more work to "fix" the fan with the new resistor...you must still remove the fan...add the wires, reinstall the fan, then you must route the new wires to a suitable mounting point for the new resistor...it is much bigger physically than the old one. Then you must test it. Not a bad fix...but you cannot acess the part while the fan is on the car...so the bumper cover, bumper, and AC condensotr must all be removed and replaced to do the fix.

Zippy, I'm already there. My supercharger was making noise and I'm just waiting for it to come back from Stiegemeier so my car is pretty naked right now.

Zippy: I would have agreed with you until I completely disassembled my system and concluded that much of that effort is unnecessary. I believe, but have not yet confirmed through testing, that all that is required is to connect the new resistor across the two red wires in the fan harness. This can (I believe) be accomplished without physically accessing the fan itself, just the wiring harness.

Should be an easy fix then....just pm Matt....at FESauto...(he is the assembling the kits right?) and maybe you can get his first kit! As long as you make sure you use a multi-strand wire, maybe 1 guage step bigger than the wire is leading up to the failed resistor, you should be good to go. Since there are likely 3 or 4 different mounting points (kinda like adding a custom horn), he will likely just toss is 6 or 7 feet of wire. The auto up window controler he took over from Ian cull is awsome too if you don't have one...it should be on every 1st gen Mini.
