"service engine soon" light on.

The service engine soon light came on this morning. I'll get it in to be checked Monday morning. I was feeling pretty good about staying on top of fix-its and now this.
Have many of you had the light come on and if so, what did your codes indicate? I can't do anything untill Monday but I will feel better knowing just what it could mean or how bad the news might be.
Thanks

Has the MINI been acting funny lately? Any leads as to what can be going wrong?

If everything was ok, maybe it's just a loose gas cap. Did you fill up recently?

I haven't filled up lately, checked the gas cap and looked to see anything obvious.
Have felt a difference when I accelerate first thing in the morning (couple of weeks) Had a couple of people drive it, to see is it was just me.
I could tell even sitting in the passengers side that it did the jumpy starts when starting out. Both drivers said it must be cold blooded. I wasn't to keen on that explanation and secretly felt something wasn't quite right.
It runs good once it's going and no drips anywhere. I hate that the warning light came on but I've suspected something's not right.
Just needed to hear what codes some folks might have had and what all was entailed.
Thanks

You don't have any local auto parts stores like AutoZone or Advance Auto that you could drive down to and have the codes read?

Thanks for your replies.
The codes will be read Monday when I take it in to the mechanic. I was just wanting to know if anyone out there has had check engine light codes read and what problems I could be possibly looking at.
Silly of me to ask and I'm sure for every warning there are hundreds of possibilities. Just thought reading what the problems might possibly be would ease the verdict on Monday.

Keep us posted, but as stated above, if you can get to Auto Zone and they read it, it could be something simple that could be fixed on the spot. Mechanics charge just to hook the scanner up.

Thanks Fatherdeth,

If the sparkplugs-wires are bad would that cause the light to go on? I'll try to get to Auto Zone tomorrow. The one close to here is mobbed on Sunday but I'll try. I've listened and crawled around and everything sounds and looks fine untill I back out and start forward. Then it's like it cuts out, doesn't die, just jumps a bit untill it reaches around 20mph.

There are approximately 224 possible individual codes which would set the light. Often multiple codes will be stored when the light gets illuminated. That being the case, guessing at what caused the light to get set and causes those specific symptoms, could lead you to troubleshooting many of the systems and sensors which are monitored by the computer. Trouble codes are one of the first steps in diagnosis on a computer controlled vehicle as they generally point you in a direction, such as an oxygen sensor or evaporative emissions control problem like the gas cap that you mentioned. While codes don't always pinpoint the problem, they do generally point to a specific system such as ignition, fuel, emissions, etc;. You will be much better off getting the codes pulled and then beginning the troubleshooting process rather than attempting to troubleshoot all of the 224 possible individual codes.

Thank you so much. I figured there were a lot of codes but had no idea how many. I'd best quit figuring untill the code even gets read. Am a little leary of driving anywhere today because of possible break down and it being Sunday.
I will get back with any news I learn tomorrow.
Thanks again

Code readers can be had for about 100.00 and are handy to have if you're usually the person who does maintenance on a vehicle.

miniblucabrio,

This is pretty nerve wracking. I will get back with what code comes up.
Good luck to both of us.

Getting back to you on the "Service engine" light problem.

Just got back from Advanced auto. The code is PO302. "Cylinder 2 misfire". I was so happy just to even have an idea what was wrong that I could have hugged the little guy who read it.
In for a tune up, in the morning
Thanks everyone for all of the info here.

With your car not being modified, you're probably safe. I know I've hit misfires on my car occasionally. Let us know what the mechanic says. Don't let them rip you off.

Fatherdeth,

It's been a long weekend. Maybe things will start falling in to place. Still got an eye out for a possible rear seal leak but so far so good.
and thanks

Mine has been on for the past 2 years since I did the head work. Took to Dinan and other local places that work on BMW & MINI and they couldn't figure it out or fix the problem. Code is something like 442 or so that has to do with the evac coming from the gas tank area. No one has been able to fix this.

I just picked my car up. Plugs, wires, tires. It runs great, no drips, no problems. Knock on wood
