Rotational Noise at 50mph
Hello,
2 weeks ago i picked up a 03 mini cooper s used.I love the car however i have a rotational noise that occurs at 50 mph and slowly dissapates until 70mph.I started thinking it was the left rear wheel bearing and i changed that....No difference.I then decided it was my tires...So my friend let me put on his wheels which are new runflats. The noise seems to better but has not dissapeared. The only thing i can think of is that it is another wheel bearing. If i turn the car sharply to the right while it is happening the noise goes away...Any other ideas? Is a low decible noise that the average persone would probably not hear. However it drives me crazy

it sounds to me like you replaced the wrong wheel bearing unless i am missing something. because if the noise goes away when you turn sharply to the right, then i would diagnose it as a bad passenger side rear wheel bearing. because when you turn sharply to the right, the pressure is being taken off the right and put on the left side of the car.

I totally agree man...Its just that i swear the noise was coming from the left rear....However a driver will be biased as they sit on that side. When i swapped the wheels today i took off the right rear and the bearing looked very old and rusty compared to the one i took off yesterday(when i replaced it).I still have the old left bearing.Im gonna swap it and see it goes away.

Bearing noise usually indicates a bearing falling out of spec (too much free play). Sometimes you can tell by holding the wheel by 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggle it (while the vehicle is raised). It should be tight.
The front wheels are bit more tricky to diagnose because they're attached to axles whose CV joints which sometimes make noise. But CV joints are more likely to sound "click, clunk" than a hum.

Update...put car on lift and the noise was there from 50-70....Locked one wheel and the noise happend. This was the passenger side...Locked the passenger side and no noise from the drivers side.Replaced right front wheel bearing....Noise is still there....Anyone else have any ideas?Im all out of ideas...
Do these diff's make slight noise? Will changing the tranny fluid help this?
