Rear wheel bearing replacement.

Hi again all,

So I've been noticing that my driver side wheel bearing needs to be replaced. Had my local shop double to check to see if that's why it really was bs they confirmed. What I was shocked by was what the Cooper shop told me it'd cost to fix. Anyone else thinking around $600 is too much? I'm pretty handy around cars myself and I was wondering if this is a job I could potentially do myself. Any comments? Thanks.

given that you can't really replace the bearing - it is a sealed unit and the procedure is to replace the hub which is straighforward, the cost is a few hours of labor plus cost of the hub. Someone here may tell you they know of a bearing replacement - all I'm saying is this is the factory line, repeated in the Haynes.....replace the full hub. (the joy of no bearing re-greasing needed over the life of the car is the fact that the bearing is sealed)

1. remove the brake assembly
2. Undo ABS sensor
3. 4 bolts hold the hub - remove and the hub is free
4. clean the surfaces and bolt up the new hub @ 41 ft lb
5. refit ABS/wheel speed sensor
6. rehang the brake

(rephrase of the procedure in Haynes - but 'everyone knows' the Haynes is crap so you probably should wait for someone with a Bentley to post better instructions )

Absolutely do it yourself.

Rears are easier than fronts, and the fronts are easy!!

The rears are pretty easy to do. We have brand new ones for $175, or I've got used ones I could make a deal on.

I have a brand new one in the box I would sell real cheap. It is the later larger wheel stud size wheel bearing.

I am in Canada so I would have to check shipping for you.

And absolutely do it yourself, it is a very easy job to do.

You said it's the later larger wheel stud size? How do i know this is the one i want? I plan to do this myself also, so if anyone has any good directions, hopefully detailed ones too, i'd really appreciate it. :]

My right front was bad and the mechanic is actually doing it now. The cost for the whole job is $350 including the wheel bearing hub assembly and labor. $600 is insane. Big problem is getting things apart especially if rust/corrosion is present. Do a search for wheel bearing hub assembly and there's a lot of good info on what you'll run into and what you'll need to do.

So if I go to replace this, the not part I need to purchase is the hub assembly? Or are there other little parts? Only reason I'm asking is I'm on vacation now, figured I'd buy the parts so they ship and get to my place by the time I'm home. Also, not a lot of the shops around where I live do work on MINI's so i need everything I'll need to replace things or I'll be out of a vehicle until whatever parts I need come in again. So can anyone help?
