Engine knock -- but not the kind that you think it is.

I have a 2010 Clubman (I'm posting in the Coupe section because there are way more people here) with something that I at first thought was just a quirk but now can't believe that it would be:

Sometimes when accelerating from a stop I hear and *feel* a strange single dull knock. I feel it through the pedals. It also happens sometimes when I go over bumps. This was happening *before* I put the front control arm bushings and the Koni FSDs in, so we can eliminate those as the cause right away. It's very noticeable - I can both hear and feel it, as can others who have driven my car.

Could it be bad engine mount bushings? Do all MINIs do this? Would be a shame if that's so, and I'm hoping it's not normal. I've not once experienced this in any other car I've owned, rented, or driven over the past 21 years, including sports cars like the 911 Turbo and BMW 335is all the way down to a Honda Civic and Subaru Outback...it's just not right.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I drive a stick. The problem is that they are going to try to blame the front control arm bushings and/or KONIs.

This used to happen to me when I parked on level ground or downhill. I now park it uphill. It doesn't make that weird sound anymore. I think parking it uphill somehow lubricates that part making the noise. Hope it helps.

This happens to my 2007 Non S Cooper automatic. I have no mods done to it, it's just stock. It has 33,000 miles on it now. It just started doing it about a week ago. It's like a click or a slight thunk sound not from the motor. Maybe suspension or control arms maybe. I think mine is coming from the front driver side. It happens about every 30 seconds and it a faint sound but I can feel it though. Any other ideas.

Thanks
Jared

I park uphill as well, so unfortunately it's simply a problem that shouldn't be there.

Any other ideas from anyone?

Sounds like the same issue, except that mine has been doing it since the beginning.

Maybe the wheel lugs are not tighten properly. I will check mine later. I did rotate the tires about 6 weeks ago. Hopefully that's it. Could be bad CV joint, control arm bushing, tie rod, bearings or springs maybe. I hate going to dealer, just a pain in my side everytime. I would rather fix it myself than deal with the dealer. But if I can't fix it I will deal with warranty claim. I'll keep you posted tomorrow once I mess around with it tonight.

Anyways I spent about 2 hours under my car trying to figure out what the sound is and I have no clue. Maybe it's 3 years old and makes wear and tear sounds now I guess. Hopefully everything is fine. It seems to only make the minor clunk sound only if I turn hard left from the left driver front area. The car is stock with around 33k miles. I guess I'll just deal with it untill I really need to go to the dealer.
