John Cooper Works exhaust installed
#1
I am now running the JCW exhaust system in my Cooper, and if it growled before, it's a lion's roar now!
I ordered the exhaust from RSpeed, which gets a high recommendation from me. Peter from RSpeed was there every step of the way to get the system to me. No small feat since I'm in Hawaii! So thanks, Peter!!!
The installation was a cinch, although I recommend having a friend help out with holding the pieces in place as they're bolted on. I did it solo, and it took just under two hours, cool-down time included. Everything is bolt-on, so there is no cutting required. It's so simple that there isn't even a need for instructions. Just unbolt the old system, transfer the mounts from the old system to the new pieces, bolt on, and you're done! The rubber mounts were a little tricky to remove from the factory system, but with the help of a small screwdriver and a scribe, they came off with a little prying.
Performance-wise, there is a definite boost. When depressing the clutch to shift, rpm drops much slower since there is less resistance to exhaust flow (at least I think that's why). Plus, the there is less lag in first gear when accelerating from a stop. And the sound is not the typical rice burner whine. It's much more throaty. The only thing I didn't particularly like was the steady hum when on the interstate above 70 mph. Otherwise, it's a great upgrade for those of us looking to boost performance on an already sweet ride.

Grassroots motorsports has an article coming out in an upcoming issue where they tested the Mini Mania exhaust, Rogue Engineering exhaust, Helix exhaust and a Supersprint exhaust. you can check out the results at http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com. I don't think the results have been published yet but from what I understand helix, a Philadelphia based company, did quite well. Their system sounds GREAT and pulls very nicely! You can check out other products from them at http://www.helix13.com
