Supercharger
I can't seem to find a DIY guide on here for that. But I do recall reading it is time consuming. I think the dealer's have it listed as a 9 hour job. You have to remove the from bumper cover and bumper I believe.
I think I am going to be in the same boat as you in the near future. I am hoping to do the swap out for a new one myself, but we will have to see.

It depends on your time frame....
1)Dealer has them NOW....so minimal down time....highest cost, least risk.
2)Some re-builders have exchange units..the better ones usually don't, but some do, and have iffy reputations...can be medium risk, medium to low cost....but many re-builders don't have them available...ask!!, adds just 2 or 3 days....One e-bay seller in FL does exchanges...cheap, good warranty, but they take shortcuts that can impact the longevity of the rebuild (gluing in seals, etc). The iffy FL place tend to call your unit the core or $200+, and charge around $600+shipping.
3)have your unit rebuilt/overhauled....800-900$, Adds a week + for the shipping, and overhaul...
but you can have "extras" done like porting, and you KNOW it is a good unit IF you get it done at a good place, and it has a known history.
4) buy a used, "take off" unit....and hope it is good. $400-600, for VERY low mile ones, a bit less more middle mile serviceable ones......worst case, it is crap, and you spend $800 to overhaul your $500 e-bay bargain....still cheaper at 1300 than the dealers...
If you do this route...be sure to re-fill the oil on the SC before installing it. But this is potentially the MOST down time.....but potentially the cheapest...

New Supercharger - what should I get
So now that I am faced with the reality that I must get a new supercharger...what should I get? 2005 with 75,000 miles. Never did any performance work on it. As long as I am doing the work...
Is there a better supercharger? Anyone get one and had a good experience from anyone?
A Pully?
?????

The 2005 SC is coated, the same as earlier JCW unit, except for the pulley size.
I would put a pulley on the new/overhauled SC when you get it, heck you will be able to put the pulley on before install, so it will be easy!! You will still need a puller, but heck, be a few minute job due to easy acess!! Since ambient temps are hot in the south, go with a 15% or even the jcw size, and cooler plugs, and tennsioner stop...WMW has a kit that is pretty good.
If you get you SC rebuilt, steigermier does porting for an extra $100 I think, so it might be worth it!
Since all the front of the motor is assessable, I would replace the waterpump,

If Atlanta isn't too far your welcome to come up here. If your getting a new supercharger you def need to put the pulley on. We can get you a new supercharger if you want. But make sure you replace the gaskets while you have it off.

I would get the normal SC and just buy a reduction pulley from your vendor of choice before the install. Don't forget to get the proper belt size if you get anything other than a stock MCS SC.
Hope this helped.

If you get an exchange unit (from someone other than the dealer)....it may or many NOT have the coating...some re-builders offer a inferior black coating...basically Teflon paint...very different than the OEM black layer....which is more of an insulating stuff, that also wears in to tighten the rotors....
This coating is one of the reason why 2005+ cars gained a few HP...so if you trade down to an uncoated SC, you might loose a bit of pep...about 5 HP...then again, with a pulley, you are still ahead of the game!!
So if you buy an OLDER used/rebuilt one...the JCW will have this coating...but you will need a different pulley puller...most places, like WMW have then, I think, if you ask. And the pree 2005 SC will not have the coating.....
If you buy used, just try to verify that the coating is intact, and not flaking off...it has happened....
The rebuilding shop I referred to as "the one on FL" is in Old Town FL, cheap price, but you are taking a chance of getting a rebuild that doesn't last, costing you more downtime+labor.....
One mentioned shop here, had a few fail, very quickly, and will not use them....as he said, on another board, they are Junk.....
Just remember if the price is too good to be true.....it is!! Shortcuts, taken when overhauling engine parts, can cost you lots more $$$ in the long run!!
Good Luck!!
