Clutch survey. How many miles on your Mini/other clutch.

So I like many others are at 38K miles and have a slightly slipping clutch. No noises, no grinding, just slipping with throttle in 6th gear mainly.
I know some have had clutches go way earlier, but how many have had no problems past 50K miles?

I was told by my SA that 35K miles is normal for a clutch? Yeah right!? I have only had 2 cars previous (both Corolla's) and never had one need a clutch within 90K miles. I owned one for 8 years and replaced the clutch once at 130K and then never again till it was totaled at 242K (still on the original engine).

If you all could take the time to fill out this survey it would be greatly appreciated. Any make/ model is welcome as long as it was a manual transmission. Even if you never had to change the clutch while you owned it please put down the mileage when you sold it.

If you have had a clutch replaced with an aftermarket one please include a short review and mileage done on that clutch.

I will start the ball rolling.

Make: MINI
Model: Cooper S Hardtop
Year: 2007

Mileage at failure start/ Mileage when Replaced:
35K/ at 39K not replaced.

OEM or Aftermarket clutch:
OEM

Symptoms during clutch failure:
Slipping higher gears mainly, hasn't gotten worse yet.

Stop go city / Open highway / Hard driving RATIO
: 50/45/5

When replaced, what was the prognosis? Part Failure? Normal wear?: Not replaced yet.

Thanks.

Thanks.
So even with an AP tune you have nothing yet. I had an RMW tune for a couple of weeks, and the day it was put on I really noticed the clutch slip in 5th and 6th (too much power for it!!!!)I had to get it removed while I save for a new clutch. I will be interested to see how yours goes.

Edit. Sorry I saw that the AP it not installed yet. Anyone else with an AP?

I'll echo the sentiments expressed by the OP: I've had cars with many, many, many more miles than this, and have never replaced a clutch on anything. I'll keep you posted as to what the SA/tech tells me.

Clutch 1:
Make: MINI
Model: Cooper S
Year: 2008

Mileage at failure start/ Mileage when Replaced: 30kish / 30kish

OEM or Aftermarket clutch: OEM

Symptoms during clutch failure: Really weird engagement, jerky. Clutch itself was fine, no slippage.

Stop go city / Open highway / Hard driving RATIO: 75/25/and I'd say 50% of my driving is hard driving ...also have had a tune since just before 30k miles, and a bigger turbo for the past 10k miles.

When replaced, what was the prognosis? Part Failure? Normal wear?: Throwout bearing/pressure plate/flywheel issue (don't remember the exact issue to be honest)...clutch was still within spec. But all parts were replaced under warranty...clutch included.

Clutch 2:

Mileage at failure start/ Mileage when Replaced: 51K / current issue, not replaced as of yet...

OEM or Aftermarket clutch: OEM

Symptoms during clutch failure: Rattling flywheel at idle, stops when clutch is pushed in. Clutch holds fine though, no slip. Even with ~260 ft-lbs to the wheels.

Stop go city / Open highway / Hard driving RATIO: see above

When replaced, what was the prognosis? Part Failure? Normal wear?: Taking it in Thursday.......

Thanks.

make/model/year: 2005 Infiniti G35
OEM clutch
mileage at start of symptoms: just over 50K
symptoms: slipping for G35
mainly stop and go driving-65 or 70 highway, 30-45 city
clutch not replaced; opted to trade in car instead of repairing
prognosis: normal wear.

I also had an Infiniti G20 that went over 50k miles before needing clutch replacement. I replaced it with OEM clutch just before I sold that car at 70k miles.

Well... I took my Mini to Universal Mini today for an "excessive battery discharge" message. They asked if there was anything else I wanted them to look at. I mentioned a weird "sigh" or "hoot" noise when taking off from a standing start. They came back with it being the clutch and said they could have it done by tomorrow. I asked how much, expecting to hear the $3000 price tag. They said "NOTHING!!!!!" under warranty!!!!!! WOW!!!!
Needless to say I said go ahead. Very happy about that one.

On a side note, I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata rental, and it is pretty sweet. Much better than my Mom's Hyundai Excel from many moons ago. Hyundai have really picked their game up. But still nowhere near as fun as the R56S!!!
