2003 camshaft sensor

I've never done it but it looks like you will have to lift the engine up a bit to get to it. Below are the instructions from Bentley...
Remove engine vibration bracket
Remove fuel line bracket bolt and set the bracket aside
Remove fuel tank vent valve
Support oil pan with a jack
Remove right side engine mounting bracket
Remove engine ground cable
Remove 4 engine mounting bolts from engine block
Lift motor
Working at the right end of cylinder head, unlock and detach camshaft sensor electrical harness connector
Unscrew sensor mounting bolt and remove sensor
When installing, lubricate sealing o-ring antiseize paste
Torque down to 9nm (7 ft-lb)

Smog fail - Error code P03040
I have a 2004 Cooper. It wouldn't pass smog because of a check engine light. The error code pointed to a faulty cam position sensor, even though it seemed to run fine.
I got a new sensor from Pelican Parts and puzzled over the proceedure for about an hour. In the end the solution I used is much easier than anything I found.
The cam sensor is on the right or passenger side (in the US) of the engine. But you can't get to it because the upper motor mount is in the way. Skip all the other BS. just remove the motor mount and walah, the sensor is exposed. Easy peasy.
Support the engine by using a 2X4 piece of wood to cushion the case and jack the engine up slightly to take the load off the motor mount. There is one nut on top of the motor mount and four bolts attaching the mount to the block. After you remove the ground cable, just remove the four bolts that connect to the block and the nut on the motor mount. Everything else can just be gently pushed out of the way. Using this method should take you less than an hour.
I passed smog a hour later, no CEL. no problem this time.

2004 Cooper S R53
I just got the part and replaced it this weekend with Eric's suggested method.
There were a few more bolts - I'm assuming because I have the S model, but very easy and straightforward. Wish I had done it a long time ago.
I had the issues with starting - it would fail on the first time and start on the second.
Also had the P03040 error code.
Code is now gone after a few short drives and it starts wonderfully.
Thanks guys!
