"Clunk " coming from engine compartment.

Ahhh MINI, MINI, MINI...

Another issue with my Clubman S that has actually been going on for some time and could never be diagnosed by the dealer is a "clunk" that comes from the engine compartment. It happens mostly on lighter acceleration. It's not super loud but is definitely there and makes the car feel like a cheap Yugo.

The dealer thought it might have been the transmission mount, which was loose already at under 16k miles, but after tightening that up nothing changed, unfortunately. It doesn't happen over bumps, just during acceleration and occasionally at other random times.

Any ideas, good MINI folk?

I have a transmission clunk when shifting into 1st gear from standstill. It has been going on for 30K miles. Never found out what it is. Is that the same as yours.

Huh. Now that you mention it, it's almost always when I start from a stop in 1st gear, yes. It's very disconcerting as it feels like I'm driving a plastic toy car...I wonder what the heck it is?

Your dealer couldn't find anything either, eh? Might be a bad batch of some some aspect of the transmission, which is obviously a gigantic job to replace.

I only heard it when someone mentioned it to me. Now I feel and hear it all the time. Does not seem to effect the operation. I think they do not design or build these cars all that well.

I believe I may have accidently passed on the noise sensitivity.

I read through this thread a while back; you guys might want to review it to see if this points to your problem as well.

My r57 started clunking and it turned out to be a resonator tube. They ordered the clips for it and it hasnt clunked since.

Any modifications? Check for objects in your intake box?

Go through and wiggle everything by hand see if you can replicate it.

I've got the same clunk when engaging into 1st gear, and into reverse. Only happens sometimes, but its very noticeable. Almost feels like a transmission mount.. I know when I had my aftermarket intake and the noisemaker, the intake housing would knock the noisemaker out of its socket and cause a "clunk", but this is certainly different, and also my noisemaker is completely removed now too.
