dreadful experience uphill - stall, e-brake, 3rd gear start
wow while i was driving in 1st gear up a very very very steep grade tonight, the rpm got lower and lower...
so i stepped on da gas and it stalled... i had no choice to stop the car... sweat all over my head and the e-brake couldnt grip da car after 5 clicks...
i got panic and i guess i shifted to 3rd gear and released da clutch and rpm up to 5,000 for a second... i smell heavy burning smell afterwards... still able to drive but the burning smell still here after 4 hours....
any damage i have done?
cheers,

Sounds like you were actually in 3rd when the "event" first occured and you just put it back in third.
Frying the clutch isn't recommended, but with a bit of luck, you will be fine. Just don't make a habit of it.
Don't panic when things go bad. If someone is behind you, ignore them, if they honk put it in reverse (that usually shuts them up...lol...wife did that twice the first week she had her mini, totally by accident, but boy o boy, were they patient after that) Stay off that hill forever.

Well, press as hard as you need to to keep going up the hill. The key thing here is not to let the RPMs get too low - 1st gear is not low enough to go up a steep hill at a very slow pace without clutch slipping. So you have to keep your speed up enough that the engine is revving high enough to make sufficient power to keep going. If the engine starts to bog, you're toast.
What you did is very hard on the clutch, but these things can take a fair amount of abuse. You probably shaved a few thousand miles off its life. The smell should go away. If the clutch is making bad noises or shuddering, you may have a new clutch in your future.
