Creaky clutch pedal or cable or something?

Hi all

Mini convertible (no s) Sept 2004 delivery, 2005 model year, 5 speed manual.
52k miles, most of them local (so a higher than average amount of clutch use)

parked next to a wall today with the window down and I noticed a sort of a creaking noise when I depress and release the clutch, in gear or out. The noise may have been there for awhile now, but i didn't notice it until i was next to something for the sound to bounce off of. Not too loud, but i want to get ahead of any serious problems.

It sounds like the noise you might imagine from a rusty spring or wire going over a pulley or a dry hinge. a low volume short mechanical creak. I'm guessing it's a cable or pulley associated with one of the clutch pedal components.

I'm hoping this is a common, easily diagnosed issue and someone here can let me know if it's a big deal or not, where to look, and what the probability is that it is what they're suggesting.

thanks
Eric

Most likely the throw-out bearing. Poor design. Newer versions are reportedly better.

My vote is on the linkage being gunked up. This happened on my 06 S and we pulled the airbox, cleaned and re-lubed the linkage to solve the creaking issue. I would be willing to bet it is the same on the cooper.

Just got an email from the dealer:

The clutch assembly uses plastic parts that can sometime cauase that noise. Usually we just lube it and its fine but I would like to still inspect it to make sure there aren't any faulty parts. Would you like me to set up an appointment?

I asked her to give me a ball park location for these components so i could check them first. Will post if i get anything useful back.

I noticed the sound wasn't there yesterday when i started my drive.
so it seems to be intermittent.
Does this provide any clues?
