Power steering pump fan - repairable?
a local dealer changed my oil and advised me that I needed a new power steering pump fan. I decided to order one online and install it myself to save on labor as well as the much higher part price from the local dealer. After I replaced it (which is a super easy job) I took a good look at the old fan. It did not spin smoothly but it did move. I then sprayed a little lithium grease on it (see red arrows in pic) and I could spin the fan by hand much smoother. Just out of curiosity, I hooked up the old fan to a 12v power source and low and behold, it spun very smoothly pushing ample air.
You can't always count on the dealer. I guess they are motivated to sell you an unneeded part but they don't realize it's such short-term thinking. Surely, if a hack like me can make the fan work by lubricating it, these trained technicians would have thought of the same thing.
Anyways, before you order a replacement fan, try lubing it first...might save a hundred bucks.
