Just turn it on and look at the compressor. You should be able to clearly see the difference when the compressor clutch engages.
Unfortunately the clutch is not available separately from the $500 compressor.

You need a high and low side pressure guage to tell if it is acually working....that and the fact if there is refrigant in the system, it is sealed, and you need a vacume pump to evacute the system, and then change the dryer if you open it up before refilling it...not complicated, but you DO need some tools and experance to do it right....
if you cannot identify the compressor....perhaps you need to go to a shop.
Do not add refergant...too much coolant will make the system stop working or burst a line....just like it will stop with too little. Same for the special oil that is mixed with the refergant....other compotents are the two radiator looking thinggs...condonsors...and a expansion valve or oriface, and a few pressure switches....it is abasic car ac system...no computer involved.
