Grinded the gears...

So this is not really a problem or issue since its user created but not sure where else to put it.

2011 MCS manual

I was coming to a stop at a red light in third gear and after reaching for something in the passenger cup holder I inadvertently knocked the shifter from 3rd gear half way into neutral without using the clutch....needless to say the shifter stopped half between 3rd and neutral and I got an absolutely terrible grinding sound as I am sure some of you have experienced.

This couldn't have lasted much more than 2 seconds before I realized what was happening and disengaged the clutch and put it into neutral...but for peace of mind (or not)...should I be worried?

I don't think anything feels different but of course now I am over analyzing the feeling of every shift and trying to convince myself that it feels different

Thanks!

I grind occasionally when going into third while driving "spiritedly." Sounds horrible each time but since it's my first manual car I'm always learning to be more careful. No damage to report and the car drives great, but I'm thinking the synchros will wear out quicker over the long haul due to the grinding.

I wouldn't worry about it at all and a couple instances won't really affect long term durability.

My experience is that you get several of those for free without causing any problems. I had a Jeep for 9 years and probably did that 20 times over the life of the car. Never had a transmission problem and got 140,000 miles on that car on the factory clutch.

I've done it twice already in the Countryman I've owned for a month.

Your penance shall be (1) good detailing including a proper wax job.

And don't do it again!

Sounds fair to me! I did this once a few months ago, maybe it's a good excuse for a professional detail including a paint restoration and swirl removal! I swear the last owner only used drive-thru washes :/

It's funny to find such a recent thread on this topic. I myself just did this AGAIN for the third time today. The scenario is the same all three times. Hitting a right hand turn via a yield lane whilst in 2nd gear and exiting with hard acceleration. Quick upshift to 3rd, revs about 5K. GRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!

I would rate my manual transmission skills at above average. I just need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I don't know if it's my clutching or if it's something to do with my throw--I suspect the former.

Adding the NM motor mount insert or the BSH mount lessens this from happening, especially under this condition. I have the BSH myself and it's helped a lot.

sounds to me like you're just missing 3rd a little bit, which naturally for any new transmission will take some time to get used to. No metal plate H-pattern like an italian car. On older cars I've driven have had issues with the shift linkage... at about the half-life of my family's suzuki that finally went beyond repair at 223k, we had a shop tear the linkage apart and replace the bushings.
